Probably going to end up eventually seeing plastic ST cards being an extra £5 on renewal - this thread may yet have some more milage from FA.

They won't be getting rid of the plastic cards just yet so folk can chill oot.

 

This is just a step towards complete digital ID etc so yes cards will still be around but I would bet not for long.
