Probably don't want China to see what happens when they panic

It's a "weather balloon" how much damage could it possibly cause...

Indeed. They could have easily shot it down before. Their excuse was they were worried it might crash into something on the ground. In Montana. There's not much on the ground in Montana. It was just an excuse, imo, but I've no idea why they were reluctant to do so.

A Russian-launched balloon was their head of state for 4 years.

They didn't do it because if they did the usual republican nuts would scream about that too. How do you know it isn't a bio weapon? Shite like that. That's the state of this country.

If they had downed over land it wouldn't have been recoverable (smashed into bits). Downing it over sea gives them a better chance of recovery, and therefore capability investigation.
My guess is that it was just a weather balloon and the current frisson of excitement will just blow over, so to speak.

As the MAGA nut jobs  lose it over Biden not shooting it down , we have this

Pardon my cynicism but this is now the perfect way to get round the freezing of the debt clock in the US. A defence scare is the perfect way for both extra spending and for the belligerents to beat their bellies and reverse their previous "no more debt" claims.

It has the whiff of that.

The US and China need to get round the back of the Wheatfield for a square go.

It was the size of 3 buses seemingly, something that size and weight would do a lot of damage if it came down on a residental street.

Besides landing in the sea there might be something left to recover, whereas on land it would have been smashed into millions of pieces.

There was also something else about that the US had been studying it for the last few days and had extracted all the information they needed from it, before bringing it down, that sounds to me that they had hacked into it's systems and downloaded whatever info they could before the potenial of losing everything by bringing it down earlier.

I wonder what size the drawing pins were that the US jets fired to bring it down?

Thought about that earlier. Maybe fired blank rockets.

China giving it the big 'we reserve the right to respond to shooting down our property'.

To play devil's advocate for a second, winds at high altitude can blow something off course. But it didn't blow all the way across the Pacific in a couple of hours. They had ample time to tell Canada/US it was coming their way. They didn't. That's intentional.

Exactly!

The US north-east had a record-breaking cold snap as this balloon was over US territory.

Coincidence??  I think not.  :whistling:

There's a relevance to the balloon story in this video, this isn't the first time Chinese balloons have entered US airspace, and were never shot down before.

And get the conspiracy shite on Fox, man what mentality could watch that.

Would've thought one hour of western tiktok usage would provide far more data to the Chinese govt than any spy balloon.

A closer look at the incredibly dumb Chinese spy balloon melodrama that exposed just how vacuous and silly much of the right-wing media discourse is.

Yeah saw that and wondered the same thing, what is it. Apparently it's a lot smaller payload than the previous incident.

Yet it merited a far quicker response, strange indeed.

I think one aspect is it was flying 20,000 feet lower than the balloon which was at 60,000 feet. This was down around 40,000 feet while commercial aircraft can fly as high as 45,000 feet before the air becomes to thin to gain any more altitude.

Apparently the object over Alaska was cylindrical and silver/grey, it has been shot down over ice, so should be retrievable, what's left of it anyway.
