Back in the late 60s or early 70s, Rangers sacked Davie White for finishing second to Celtic. They had lost one league game all season long, but it was to Celtic.

History is repeating itself.

They won the cup winners cup in 72 so not the worst decision.

Tommy Burns was sacked at Celtic and never lost a game all season.

Rangers played Sporting Lisbon on the way to that final. They won 3-2 at home and lost 3-2 away. Both teams scored in extra time to make the score 6-6 on aggregate. The away goals rule, which had only recently been introduced, was understood by the referee, and both teams, to have only applied during normal time. All parties were called to the referees room to toss a coin to decide the winners, which Rangers lost.

However, John Fairgrieve, a sports journalist and great Hearts fan, who was present at the game, told Rangers that the away goals rule also applied during extra time and that they should inform the referee and claim the tie.

You would imagine if our man John hadn't intervened on the night, that UEFA would have corrected the error, but who knows.

Thanks for sharing that as obviously never realised it.  Good story even if the bad guys won a cup :)

The late, great, John Fairgrieve wrote about it in later years. His column in the Sunday Mail was often a treat.

Too early for me mate.  Journalism has deteriorated in the past 20 years massively though.

A great journalist I also worked beside his son at Gogarburn for a while.

Mick Beale close to agreeing terms.   That was a short stay at QPR 😂

He would get a fair amount of leeway at QPR; they run a fairly tight ship now. He will get no leeway at Rangers. Still, he does know that.

Too many of the same players that knew him as the coach and nae money in the kitty - can't seeing new Rangers being much a much longer stay tbh, more Airbnb than picking out new curtains.

Was speaking last night to a QPR season ticket holder.  They are not much bothered about losing Beale - which you'd think they would be if they rated him...

I cant post a link but Sevco's twitter has "The 18th manager of Rangers Football club" why do they always feel the need to try and force this concept about them being the same club, every single opportunity they do it. Do they think if they say it often enough everyone will just forget they are a new club.

Rangers have clearly bought into the chat that Beale was the man behind the plus points of SG’s career to date.

The rich man's Davie Martindale.

A great journalist in an era when someone not associated with the OF could be the star columnist for a weegie rag. And could actually write.

Like all good Hearts fans he did not have or at least was not blinded by maroon tinted glasses. After we lost in the cup to Forfar he suggested Tynie should be turned into a car park.

More to do with the record of not having many managers in their history making it more prestigious.  We have in comparison had about 50.

So how many managers have Sevco had? Genuine question for anyone.

I remember that one.
He was also prone to attending games involving his local junior team, Arniston Rangers. I remember him giving Kilbirnie Ladeside some stick for complaining about a frozen pitch when they lost a Scottish cup tie at Arniston. He wondered at how the Ayrshire hard men could be so soft.

Quite a lot for a 10 year old club then. I reckon McCoist must be their longest serving manager.

This could be their Cathro moment.

There’s a big difference from being a highly thought of coach in the background, to taking on the main job and facing the music every day.

Defo. Thats why the 18 manager crap is even more important to them.

Bizarre choice.

Not going to catch the other Arse cheek this season. No experience and completely untested.

Under massive pressure from day 1.

Hope he fails miserably.

His book, Awa Wi The Goalie is well worth a read. Very funny but also lots about the junior game (as it was).

As for The Rangers, this appointment is going to end in tears for them

Bazzas right boot

He gets this year as a  free hit.

Finishes 1st- he's a hero.

Ends up 2nd- not his team, GvB' fault

Has a good amount of time to get things in place for next season.

If it goes tits up, he get paid off and ends up back in the English championship with a wad of cash.

No lose situation for him.

When Gerrard was still there I heard a lot of chat about Beale being the man who basically ran the show. Hope I’m wrong but I have a feeling he’ll turn things round there. Probably too late for the league but narrow the gap and give Celtic a scare and win a cup would be a serious result for him.

Hey, that's some manager rangers have signed eh? According to the BBC and STV news last night, he's like the new Sir Alex...

The OF have destroyed Scottish football as a contest.  For them 1st is 1st and 2nd is nowhere.  Bring back the 80s, Fergie, McLean, Alex MacDonald!

I am not too disheartened by this news . We were not going to catch them any way , but we need them to take points of Aberdeen and Hibs in the next round of fixtures , so a new manager bounce would be most welcome
