Went about a year ago.

Do the Rockefeller center instead of Empire State building as you get a much better view of Skyline.

This was taken by me:

Agreed. And in the opposite direction an amazing view of Central Park.

Is it possible to fly into one place in America and fly home from another without effectively buying two single tickets?

I flew into Washington DC, going home from Newark.

I booked it through Trailfinders. Flew with United Airlines. Direct from/to Edinburgh.

I suppose my answer to question is.

I don’t know.🤠

a couple I know went and said it was better than NY.

Boston is way better than NY ... Good hub for exploring other parts of NE ... and you can get to NY in 3.5hrs by bus if you need to

Yes. Do a search for a multi-city trip on Skyscanner.

Aye, it's called an open jaw ticket. I do it all the time , and book single domestic flights when in the US. It often works out cheaper than buying a multi trip ticket.

As someone who's been lucky enough to visit New York on several occasions over the years for both work and leisure it never fails to amaze me why people would want to stay at Times Square. Last time I was over I stayed in an Air BnB in Alphabet City near the East Village and it was a great place to stay.  But as the subway is so good as long as you are near a station you can pretty much stay anywhere. And as others have said if you are on Manhattan it's an easier city to walk than people imagine.
