New York

I know there have been NY threads before but a search doesn't bring them up. Got the chance to go to NY for a few days with the wife. Flights I can take care of but suggestions for places to stay would be nice. Nothing too fancy but no dumps either. 25th anniversary so somewhere decent should get me ma Nat King.

I currently live in the Cayman Islands. Just recently voted the most expensive place on the planet! Be nice to get a cheap pint 😆.

Take plenty of money, New York is one the most expensive in the USA.

It is but there is plenty to do and places to eat/drink which is isn't pricey at all.

@EH11_2NL Happy to help if you DM me.

I was in NY last year and I didn’t find it too expensive.

I suppose it what you can afford.

Eating I used  a place particularly for breakfast was Essen on

36th Street 8th Avenue.

I stayed at the Hilton midtown last time. the room was nice and it had a massive bed so you can still find a dry spot after you get your nat king.I think it worked out at around 100ish per night.  It's about a 5min walk either way to central park and times sq.

Everytime I've gone (5+ now) we always try to stay near-ish to Time Square. It's pretty centrally located if you want to cover all of Manhattan during your visit.

If you are not too fussed about location, the other two boutique-style hotels that I've stayed in are the Avalon (Koreatown - great BBQ food in the Miss Korea restaurant nearby), or the Evelyn (NoMad area) - both utterly wonderful places to stay. That end of the island is good for the WTC, Empire State, Bryant Park, Wall Street, Battery Park etc.

In saying that though, the subway is so good, it really doesn't really matter all that much.

I have been to New York twice.

So much to see and do.

Found the sporting events costly.

Baseball and football.

Take identification with you if you want alcohol.

The only place I did not like was Central Park.

Found it nothing special.Full of joggers, cyclists, squirrels and rats.

The John Lennon part to was a huge disappointment.

Everything else was great. The Metropolitan Museum of Art my Highlight.

See I thought the park would be shite and wasnt fussed about it but I went round central park on my own and really enjoyed it. It's good not having to put your hand in your pocket for a few hours and just donder about.

I presume you mean the sporting events are expensive while attending because baseball is dirt cheap for tickets.

Pretty much impossible to get lost there. Do all the touristy stuff and, if you can go to a sporting event. Was never interested in baseball until I went to see the Mets.

(Typical me couldn’t have picked the Yankees)

I found it the easiest city to get around.

Agreed. The statues to Walter Scott and Robert Burns were a welcome surprise.

Recently back from New York and DC and loved New York.

Highlights include:

Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Highline

The Metropolitan Museum

The UN

Empire State

Seeing the NY Mets at Citi Field

9/11 Memorial Museum

Stayed in a hostel off Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn. Lots of decent bars in that area which were cheap.

As others have said you can certainly eat and drink well for not much more than you would in the UK.

Craig Gordons Gloves

Taking the wife and kids in October, bought the NYC City Pass (about $450 for all of us) and that takes care of Empire State, Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty, Museum of Natural History, Air and Sea Museum and a couple of other things that if we'd paid separately would have been way more.  Going to be way different from when i lived there and all the weekend drunken trips i've had there since.  Kids are looking forward to it and i can't wait to see their wee coupons when they get there and experience it all for the first time.  Other agenda items include Central Park, Highline, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park and Times Sq.  Quite glad that the massive Toys R Us on Times Sq is now closed.

Sit and listen to the jazz bands in Washington Square.

I loved New York. Staggering city. Stayed in a hotel near Central Park, but next time I’d book an apartment.

Got a trip there in February. It is part for a week long trip. Glasgow to Iceland for 3 nights then Iceland to NY for 4 nights. £700 flights and Accommodation (Hotel is in Times Square in NY, not sure about Reykjavik).

This thread and the others have been a good help.

I stayed in the HI NYC hostel near Central Park. It's about £30-40 a night for a dorm bed. Might be cheaper if you are a hostel member (can be a member for £25 a year via SYHA). Was easy using the subway in and out to downtown Manhatten.

Just checked there are other hostels that do private rooms for as little as £35 a night. Check out hostelworld.com

Missus is ridiculous at finding holidays deals. She goes on about 6 trips a year. Think this one was booked through Ramsay Travel. Sure she seen it on a facebook group.

Last year we went to Magaluf for 5 nights all inclusive for £200 each with Ryanair with the same agent.

Good stuff. Cheers, will check that out. My gf has given me not so subtle hints she wants to go to NY for her 50th, so l've a few years (about 3, she won't thank me for saying that!) to plan yet! Hope you enjoy your trip. Rejkavik is awesome.

That's who I use. They always have a offer on the go and we've never had a issue with the hotels they use.

Went about a year ago.

Do the Rockefeller center instead of Empire State building as you get a much better view of Skyline.

Also Staten Island ferry is good as it's free. You get a free view of statue of liberty and the skyline from the river.

Walk over Brooklyn bridge. Some sight at night time!

Other free things to do like NY library etc

Enough of the touristy stuff for a minute guys.

What are the recommended draught beers/lagers.

I'm just back from the states, had a fair few different kinds of beers but I couldn't go on a session with them - far too strong flavoured and gassy. Reverted to piss water like Bud Light if I wanted a scoop.

Just leaving New York.

blue point toasted lager was my favourite.

Anybody going should take loads o money.

And , I hope they finish building it soon.

I couldn’t believe the amount of construction work.

apart from that it was great 🤠
