There's only been one good ref: Paul Williams' handling of England v Tonga was excellent. Barnes was OKish; the rest were shocking. With Angus Gardner's total incompetence throughout France v Argentina the worst of the lot, because it changed the outcome. Their challenges in the 1995 World Cup quarter-final with South Africa should've had some of them prosecuted, quite frankly. Goodness knows, the rugby authorities treat the Pacific Islanders abominably badly - and the referee of Fiji's game as good as committed brutal assault against them throughout the second half. But people gloss over stuff like this and romanticise these teams far, far too often. The challenges above are those of violent thugs who shouldn't be anywhere near a rugby pitch. shaun.lawson
Fiji 27-30 Uruguay. Greatest win in this country's rugby history by a million miles. An unbelievable achievement: most of the players are amateurs. It was an absolute pleasure to watch. They gave bloody everything, and are heroes no matter what now. This could be the moment rugby goes big time (or at least, semi-big time) here. Small country; huge heart.

Jambo in Japan
A lot can change by the end of the pools. We've had 2 key players sent home through injury already and if we're expecting to beat Japan then we'll need to get through the next two games, particularly Samoa, relatively unscathed. Japan will also have a rest week before the final match whereas we're only getting a few days break. All of this, combined with the crippling loser's mentality that has infested the SRU for the last 15 years means that, to be honest, I wouldn't be too surprised if we come up short. Actually, neutrals will argue that Japan into the quarters will be better for the game worldwide, and us out in the pools might make more chance of a coaching change. Who knows. At club level though they are good teams full of internationals that is a lower levels and you can get away more with relying on attacking play with physicality provided by a few foreign often Pacific nation players. This. There's a big difference between club and international level in Rugby, as with football, but the differences seem amplified in my opinion. Not sure Townsend has adjusted to having his players together only a handful of times throughout the season for only a handful of tests compared to training every week amongst regular weekly fixtures. As mentioned the pro14 gives more margin for error but it's cut-throat at international level. There definitely seems to have been a step taken backwards since the last WC. Under cotter we were getting results against tier 1 nations, and now we seem to have gone back to running them close but ultimately on the wrong side of scorelines. You could argue he needs more time. Jones has had a full world cup cycle, Schmidt more than that, Gatland been at Wales for 10 years, but the other common denominator there is that they are coaches sought from abroad. Born winners imported from elsewhere. Townsend's credible success at Glasgow doesn't mean, for me at least, that it'll translate to international success. Thommo414
Think this is it for us tbh. As it stands you've got Japan 9 Samoa 5 Ireland 5 Scotland 0 Russia 0 We play Samoa, Russia and Japan. Need to be taking 14 points from that minimum. Last pool game is against Japan so can only hope they have a tough ride against Samoa and lose a bit of momentum before they play us because Ireland will easily take 10 from the tier 2 nations

Victorian
Incredible. We could go out due to a good decision of the world #1 team to kill a game for a losing bonus point vs Japan in only the 2nd pool match. As unlikely things go, that would take some beating. I think everyone would agree on that but you've missed the point of the post. It's just such an unlikely set of events to have occurred so early. Scotland were poor vs Ireland and are generally a bit limited but these events have conspired to almost put Scotland out after one match vs the world ranked #1 side. There's still a chance of course. Apologies, I read your post as if we go out in that scenario it will be due to the unlikely circumstances rather than because we didn't take care of three lower ranked teams. We're certainly in a bit of a pickle now but barring an absolute con from a referee like the last world cup I think we'll only have ourselves to blame if we fail to go through.
