Yeah its a shame really, Scotland has produced some outstanding talents at youth level that just haven't made the step up. Did the national team at youth level not beat a Portugal team including Figo (years ago now!) ? IIRC almost none of that team made it professionally.

Quite a few of them did...

Gary Bolan

Andy McLaren

Brian O'Neil

Neil Murray

David Hagan

Kevin Bain

Paul Dickov

...and a number went onto reasonable careers in the lower leagues down south or up here.

That semi v Portugal at Tynecastle was rammed, nearly 30 000 for a midweek game. Im sure the ko was delayed to let evetyone in. I can mind battling my way to the shed on crutches having broken my leg a few weeks before. Mental.

I doubt the new Messi would be signing for us. Any good young talent is welcome but it’s all relative.

Correct haha

Apart from he’s 22 and not really a kid. ?

He’s the only wonder kid I know off from Croatia. Signed for FCB at 16.

Did a poster on here not throw a Chinese at Novikovas as he walked past his window or something? In a rage that he was laughing with his pal as he walked down the street after a poor result?

Premature to include Burns and I wouldn’t include Temps as a what might have been, but we’ve had some corkers over the years. Podraig Moran was meant to be the Irish Ryan Giggs.

I remember Allan Johnston was supposed to be our Ryan Giggs and I believed that for a time. He should have stayed with us but chose a path to obscurity.

He went to Rennes in Ligue 1 and then onto Sunderland. Hardly obscurity!

He didn't last long at any club after leaving us and his dream move to old Co didn't go as he hoped. He was a skilful player but he didn't fulfil his potential.

Wasn't David Gray hailed as a wonderkid when he was with us and left for Man Utd for £50K?

His career didn't half nosedive

Hearts, Rangers, Sunderland, Kilmarnock, few big teams on loan.

Wish Id had a career that obscure.

The game I always remember with the wonderkid tag is the schoolboy international in 1980

England 4 v 5 Scotland

Attendance 69,000 at Wembley

Teams were

England – P Lara (Heston Comprehensive School), M McGinty (Bishop Ullathorne School), D McClure (Edgware School) (captain), D Byrom (St Augustine’s School), W Donald (Furze Platt School), P Wimbleton (Broomfield School), D Willis (Benfield School), P Rideout (Kingsdown School), G Parris (Seven Kings High School), R Jones (Woodlands School)

Sub: P Brown (Washwood Heath School) for Jones

Scotland – A Bruce (Craigmount High, Edinburgh), E MacDonald (Belshill Academy), A O’Connor (St Ambrose High, Coatbridge), C Plenderleith (Currie High, Edinburgh), R Coyle (St Gerard’s Secondary School, Glasgow), P Nicholas (Holyrood Secondary, Glasgow), J Robertson (Portobello High), P McStay (Holycross High, Hamilton) (captain), J Sludden (St Mungo’s High, Falkirk), S Rae (Musselburgh Grammar), A Dick (St Modan’s High, Stirling)

Subs: C Currie (Wishaw High) for Nicholas, D McKay (Lourdes Secondary) for Dick

Only 23 appearances for Rennes, 87 for Sunderland and 14 for the old Rangers over a five year period though. Underwhelming IMHO.

Kostadinov and Copil are the only ones I would really say were hyped up as wonderkids from that list.  Another was Wagner.

Juanjo was in his twenties by the time he signed for us as well.

The rest were just promising youngsters.

Was Wagner not at Hibs before us? I think a part of this debate comes down to whether or not they were hyped locally or internationally tbh. I’ll admit (obviously) that some were more hyped and recognised than others outside of Edinburgh.

Apologies. I thought it was a list of guys who never quite lived up to the hype. To be fair, it would’ve been difficult to do so given some of the reports we’d heard of these kids. Here’s a wee team (different eras) of kids who we had that were meant to have huge futures and ended up at Brechin and such, one even went to Hibs!!!

Gary O’Connor

Fraser Mullen

Paul McMullen

Robbie Horn

Conrad Balatoni

Callum Tapping

Tommy Harrison

Neil Janczyk

Dmitri Copil

Bronamir Kostadinov

Jamie Mole

Some list that! Wasn’t aware of Jos, either.

2 hours ago, Jammy T said:

Yep. But not sold as a wonder kid like Copil and Kostadinov were.

Completely different

Copil and Kostadinov were the most obvious serious stand outs from the list, but the others were expected to go on to big things too.

There's always a 16 year old new Messi on the go in Croatia. They seem to produce millions of quality number 10s.

Thats probably down to Luka Modric.

Unbelievable player

Maybe but the hype at the time suggested he would have gone on to achieve more.

Certainly was. He had a trial at Benfica IIRC, easy to see his talent just a guy with a poor attitude. I actually heard bad things about him around Edinburgh when he was here

If he was a wonder kid he’d have succeeded in his trial with Benfica.

Novikovas wasn’t a wonder kid FFS.

One of the top academies in the world, look at the players they have produced. Superb achievement to even have a trial there

Not read every post in this thread but going by the headline I just wonder what they put in the water in Croatia. It’s staggering the amount of talent they produce for a small nation

I'm in Split at present. You just need to look around to see why they are successful. Good weather, very tall athletic population and a decent diet. None of these apply to Scotland.

Really though Janczyk was going to be great. Still watch his assists against Hibs.

Was talking to Tapping in the gym a couple of months ago nice lad and spoke well of the Jambos

I was 5 at the time so my opinion may be a bit skewed ? Scotland were runners up to a Saudi Arabia team that looked like they were well in to their 20's! (Turns out it was the u19 world cup)

And Croatia best player is a scrawny short-arse who grew up in a war zone.

Funny old game.
