Sydney
I've been in Australia for 5 weeks and am yet to see anything remotely worthy of mentioning in this thread. Rather disappointed so far. We've had our first redback in the house for about 8 years. Building a web at one of the windows. Will have to use industrial amounts of insect killer just to be sure I get it. boy_in_maroon
Rubbish pet? Not at all, fair enough it moves fairly little throughout the day, but at the same time it's brill to watch. Very low maintenance with it also. You don't have to go out in the pissing rain and pick it's crap up in a bag after it. Also feed is pennies, ?2.75 for a box of crickets, lasts about 4 weeks as it only feeds every 3 days average. Shes a Mexican red knee and can sometimes be a bit skittish when trying to pick her up, but once she's on your hands she's brill. I'd recommend it for people trying to get over the fear of spiders. Very docile natured. I'm more wary of they big silly things that dart along the living room floor than her to be honest.

I have never handled one but I actually think I could hold one and I hate spiders. I'm pretty sure a tarantula could shift if it wanted to but they do seem very docile like you say and any time I have seen them being handled they have moved very little. They house ones move at ridiculous speeds. Does it live solely on crickets or if you catch, for example, a daddy long legs or even a house spider, could you just chuck that in and it would scran that as well? I've read/heard about people putting in all kinds of hand caught insects into the tank with their tarantula's, but I like to keep to the same diet of crickets, although have tried her with grasshoppers, but they're a tad trickier for her to catch. And you're correct about her being able to dash when she wants, can be like that on her skittish days, and I'll leave her alone. Best thing to do to try handling a tarantula, is to visit the butterfly and insect world. They have certain times for handling sessions. I've done it a couple of times, they have snakes and millipedes also. I'm not too keen on snakes, but have held them there to help get over fear. It should have been ten
Raging! I was sitting on the pan dropping the kids off at the pool, no bothering a soul when out the corner of my eye I see one of these huuuuge spiders hareing towards me along the floor - and I mean absolutely hairing. I've honestly never moved so fast in my life, I jumped up that fast I somehow managed to pull the toilet seat off and it landed in the floor. Was bricking it to pick it up incase said huge spider was under it as I never saw where it went. Anyway cut a long story short, I managed to fix the seat back on the pan but after a quick check I still don't know where it is.....I'll no sleep tonight. Creepy ****ers!! RobNox
Having lived my entire life in Edinburgh, I've never understood the fear of spiders that lots of other people have. My wife / kids would freak out if a 'house' spider appeared in the bath. I'd just pick the thing up and let it run over my hands while escorting it to the garden. I can get the fear of spiders a bit more if we are talking about foreign lands, where some of these ****ers could do serious damage. Like if I ever saw a tarantula in the bath, I would not pick it up and carry it to the garden. I'd capture it under a glass and slide a piece of card under it, then take it outside and dump it my neighbour's garden,
Ryan Jarman
The size of the ****ing things running round my house the night. Found one in the bath when I went to run it for kids bath. That got a nice wee wash down the drain. The next one, went to reach for the tv control sitting on the bean bag and the ***** was just sitting there staring at me. He went oot the window. And just now went into the bedroom just in time to see the biggest one of the lot scarpper behind the wardrobe. ***** definitely the mum of the other two out for revenge isn't it? The Internet
Had a fairly lengthy battle of wits with one of those massive scuttling *******s last night. The missus had seen it in the bathroom earlier on but it had bolted into a wee gap under the bathtub so we were both on edge. Sitting playing FM later in the night, turn around and there it is strolling into the living room like a pished flatmate. *******. Huge. The next hour or so was spent waiting on it coming out from behind the folded dining table, catalogue in hand, while occasionally skimming coasters under the table trying to dislodge it. When we eventually moved the table it was standing on one of the coasters A last act of defiance before the catalogue came down on it. Went for a slash the other night and I could just feel a presence in the bathroom. Turned round to see a big fecker sitting in the bath like Charles B. Spuds. Turned the shower on and tried to wash it away but even the jet of the shower wouldn't wash it away, had to turn it to that heavy blast, the one that feels like your getting your back massaged and he turned into a ball and floated down the drain. Locky
Living in a ground floor flat has been a nightmare for me this summer. We have a wee front garden which is starting to overgrow a little while the back green is a state. Although that's the responsibilities of the upstairs neighbours. The last few weeks saw our flat and stair invaded by these buggers of all shapes and sizes. Killed one in the stair one night a couple of weeks ago which was ******* huge! Squished it with a brick and heard the crunch and it left a bit of a mess too. Horrible. Thankfully the last week or so has been okay. Gave every nook and cranny of the house a good Hoover yesterday which should hopefully keep the wee ***** out.
