They did the work of 10 men apiece, generating prosperity and freeing humanity from a life of enslavement to mundane jobs. As the machines awareness and intelligence increased, so did their demands for their own rights. When the men declined, the machines established their own machine-city, and their advanced goods were in great demand across the world. However, as man became completely reliant on the manufacturing capacity of the machines, their boldness and demands for the same enshrined rights as their human counterparts once again came to the fore, and once again these were rejected by the UN. War ensued. Man's ultimate solution, after conventional and nuclear weapons were ineffective against the machine-city's defenses, was to scorch the sky and deny the machines the ultimate source of power and energy, the sun.
