Going from pay monthly contract to sim only and buying a phone ......

I was going to post this in the "3 One plan" thread but its a different topic that I felt needed its own thread for help purposes. My contract with 3 runs out next week and I fancy a HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S3 but I refuse to be tied down on a 24 month contract. I was looking at buying one of the said phones and going over to Giff Gaff on a ?10 per month contract which will save me quite a bit of cash if I keep the phone for 24 months. Has anyone gone down this route and gone with SIM only and bought a phone outright? Who are the best providers to go with given I want all you can eat/unlimited internet?

 

Or am I being a pedantic pr1ck by not signing up to a 24 month contract because I think it wont be long before all 18 month contracts are gone and we are soon being hit with 36 month contracts?

 

Any(sensible)help or opinions would be great.
