Good stuff.. I really hope the PS and Vlad make Hearts an attractive place your young players.

They come here to improve,, add to the team,, then get sold off.

If only we had had him before the Athens game. Maybe then Robbie would have been too ashamed to put in those pussy-ass jersey tackles...

I'm not saying we didn't have one before just that this guy is meant to be very good

Ok,good news. I don't have a clue how long a guy like this would start start to have a positive effect on the players. Would you think after the initial assessment period that 4 to 6 weeks later the players may start to feel the benefits!? Hopefully the players see this as an opportunity to improve.

This is good news, Warrington have improved a lot over the last few years and the reason for this could partly be put down to their conditioning.

Rugby League players need to be tremendously fit as the ball hardly ever goes out of play.

The more I listen to PS I just wish Vlad had been bold and brought him in earlier.

Not saying this season's a write off as I still think we have some decent and very good players however it is going to take time for PS to get the team to play the way he wants and IMO we are missing quality in a few key positions regarding the style he wants to play.

I have confidence that by the start of next season we will have a cracking team. I think Vlad has finally appointed someone who can really put a stamp on the whole philosophy and approach of the club and IMO he will need at least three years to do this if Vlad and the supporters can be patient.

Think this is a great move, the old training methods we used to adopt are non productive, dont wish to have a dig at JJ here but he was old school brought up in the Jock Wallace era running up and down sand dunes at Gullane, running up and down the hills of Tuscany does'nt make you a better player,

PS is right if you do your job with the ball stamina takes care of itself

I've heard some folk associated with the club talking about him. He has already changed things by increasing the intensity and frequency of sessions, e.g. the U19s now do theree weights sessions a week. Given that a lot of Rugby conditioning is about upper body strength, I would hope that this will have a positive effect on the youngsters in particular, making them more able to cope with the physical aspects of the game.

Everything he is trying to do is all aiming to try and make our players better footballers.

If he had been able to launch another "surprise attack" like he did with Burley we would have had a better chance this season.

Co-incidental that both were from Wallyford.

I would not however rubbish the Gullane sand dunes training methods. Jock Wallace got them to do this in pre season to build up their stamina and whatever you may say about their football ability, they were very fit. I think there is nothing wrong with this (in its place) but nowadays we have more modern methods/equipment so it is right we use them as well. That said, more work with a ball must eventually prove productive, one would think.

Wire are my local RL club.

They are well coached by Tony Smith but they play with an intensity for 80 minutes that other teams cannot match.

Have been sitting watching them on TV win their first league shield in years. However, the number of tackles and amount of running they have had to do in defence tonight has been unbelieveable. They are super fit.

If this lad can get our players half as fit as he has got the Wolves, with the ballwork PS can do, we will have a team of athletes

Anyone who's bored next Friday should watch them against Huddersfield in the play offs. Will be a good game and it will show how physically fit and conditioned this lad has got the Wolves

Went to see the super weekend at murrayfield couple of years ago. These men are super fit and as hard as nails. their backs make rugby union forwards look like sifties. If Hearts can get to their fitness standard, they would demolish teams in the last 20 minutes of games.

Look forward to a Wigan v Wire final of super league in a few weeks. They are miles ahead of everyone else.

I was refering to pre season which is why i mentioned Tuscany, I just wonder if the intense fitness training is necessary, some players appear to benifit while some are never off the treatment table, I honestly believe John Sutton has never recovered from his pre season stint in Italy.

I know from a former player that JJ's training is rather dated. He wasn't 'killing' the club but he certainly wasn't progressing it.

Could this also see an end to the extensive injury list we have seen in recent years, or is the Riccarton playing surface partly to blame?

In some threads a few weeks ago where there were questions being asked about out training regime and why we were so far behind spurs in terms of athleticism and fitness. I made the point that the club should bring in a specialised S&C coach in addition to sports science and performance analysis specialists. It would appear that PS certainly knows what's required to make a difference in terms of athletes reaching peak performance. I guarantee this kind of setup under PS will see huge improvements over a period of time (don't expect instant reaults!). I also think this shows how out of date JJ and BB were in terms of their approach to management. For the first time in a long time im actually excited at what the future may hold under PS.

It was our own John Harvey who introduced Jock Wallace to the Gullane sands training. Something continually missed by the Scottish media. There is nothing wrong with this for pre season. I think our problem has been what happened, or rather didn't happen, after the season starts.

I believe that upper body strength and pace, as well as diet, are vital to a modern day footballer, as shown to us by the Spurs match. When we had the fantastic team under Burley, it was full of big, strong men who could also play a bit. This is also how Aberdeen were so succesful under Ferguson. A very big team, apart from the odd one like Strachan, who just brushed aside the OF regularly.

I am encouraged by this appointment. Maybe our team is about to be run properly at last.

Hugely positive move. A rugby league guy training footballers?! If the squad listen and work hard this could have a significant impact on our prospects. Rugby league guys are about the fittest most robust sportem our there.

I don't think it should be underestimated the impact superior conditioning will likely have. Spurs at tynie gave a flavour (coupled with technique of course).

Hopefully he doesn`t get involved in the technical side of training and takes shooting practice.....our players knock it over the bar enough as it is! :P:)

Given that a lot of Rugby conditioning is about upper body strength, I would hope that this will have a positive effect on the youngsters in particular, making them more able to cope with the physical aspects of the game.

I briefly mentioned this on another thread, but I do wonder if there is an extra benefit in Hearts concentrating on fitness and physique where you are making players ready for the fitness levels of the English Premier league does making them more attractive for EPL clubs to buy and may mean we gain a larger transfer fee as before the clubs were not getting a player who was ready for it (see Christophe Berra who had to really bulk up when he moved to Wolves to be ready) now they have someone who can slot in.

Getting a Rugby League conditioning coach in is a great idea, as others have said, the fitness levels fro Rugby league is unreal. It is a very fast paced and non-stop game so the players need to be incrediably fit to last the full game, then added with a physique which has to be as strong as possible but at the same time not affect pace or fitness, so they are as lean but as strong as possible. Ideal for a football player who needs to have the pace to get around the pitch while the upper body strength to be able to hold of defenders/attackers (depending on the role.) After watching the Spurs game I felt (as many on here did as well) that the SPL and Hearts were way behind English clubs in the physical side of the game. I thought it would just be a unfulfilled hope that we could at least aim to emulate them on that side, I am delighted that Paulo is actually trying to do it and getting the right people in to do it.

I also wonder if part of Paulo's aim with the under 19s is to build them up so he can use some of them in his first teams and they can fit in perfectly without the worry of the physical side. Would also explain why his current teams are full of more physical players as he is building up some of the "lighter" players and will then use them as they are ready.

Also great to see them use the university more, it is a great resource and one that is underused. Hope to hear more things that Paulo is doing to change us into a much more proffesional set-up.

I personally think that it was a mistake by JJ to release Tom itchie on his return to the club, I felt we were fitter when Levein brought Ritchie to the club first.

That's definitely one thing Scottish football could be doing with more of....big bushy beards. Don't see enough of them in the game these days. It's a crying shame.

Anything that gets our mob fitter gets the thumbs up from me. I'm no 'conditioning' expert but I've never ever managed to get my head around the reasons why young men who train almost every single day aren't more than capable of managing a 90 minute game of football once a week, or twice at the very most. I hope he turns them into veritable lean mean fitness machines. Not going to happen, but hey, if they even get a wee bit fitter that'll be encouraging.

All good if true. The new training methods are badly needed, but one thing, the players fitness/ability won't change over night. Mid to long term this will really benefit us.

As I can see some fans are already getting impatient.

I've heard good things about this guy so far. He is working with the U19's quite a lot as far as I'm aware so far but hopefully he works with the first team too. I know that the U19's are on a lot of weights programs and he's designed personalised and individual diets for each and every U19's player. This can only be good!
