The club itself could do more to encourage attendance. I think it would be a good idea to include, for symbolic value obviously, a voucher for the service in the season ticket booklets - even make it fixture no.11. Anything to raise the profile of this annual event even further. (My apologies if anyone finds this suggestion tacky or inappropriate - I think it could be done in a dignified way.) Possibly not such a tacky idea... IIRC I think some of those Hearts players who did return at the end of WWI, but were unable to continue playing, were gifted season tickets by the club in recognition of their service. I'm sure I was shown one of these ticket books a few years ago. So having a 'reminder' of our historic connection in the current ST book would seem rather appropriate gesture to me... This is about making sure we remember the guys that paid the ultimate sacrifice, wherever their allegiance may have lain, and sending a very clear message to the Council that we want 'Our Memorial' returned to it's rightful place as soon as is practically possible. Everyone should visit a service on Novembers second Sunday, whether it's haymarket or there local Service. In the past the turnouts have been appaling considering the importance of this day and this service so get off your backsides and get down to Haymarket folks. I dont think its a bad idea at all, as you say, anything to raise the profile. Hopefully people wont moan about someone wearing jeans like happened last year, dress is not the issue being there is. No matter how young or how old you are, and no matter your sporting allegience, please make the effort to come along and show your respects on Sunday. As a previous poster has alluded to, the annual service should be viewed in the same way as attending a home game. We should all make the effort to attend, indeed it should be viewed as strange if you do not attend. For me as a regular attender, this years service is as important as any, not least of all to send out a clear message regarding what the Memorial, and the Service means to all the people of Edinburgh, and to those from further afield who attend. I think the club web site makes the case: "Given this is the last service at Haymarket before the War Memorial is temporarily moved for tram works, we hope as many supporters as possible are there to stand shoulder to shoulder and show their respect for those who gave their lives for their country" Please attend. This isn't just any old memorial, it's special for many reasons....in terms of the history it represents and also because...well...it's ours. What you're wearing isn't important, but being there is.
