What is the best line up you can think of, from players that you were aware of from when you first got interested in football, so it could range 10 years it could be 50 years. Also they would be at their peak performance (or as peak as they have been so far in their career.)

Mine

Buffon

Cafu, Puyol, P Maldini, R. Carlos

Figo , Kaka, Zidane

Messi, Romario, Ronaldo (original)

Started to do this then noticed Sandy's choice of McGrain, who I was going to have as my 'secret scotsman' - he had a truly magnificent season and a half where he was both commanding full back and imperious winger.

I have no original choices outside of him so I'll get myself off to bed

Sacrilege! Simpson over Cruikshank - hang your head in shame!

Not sure i'd have had Johnston and Jinky in the same team either - probably Lennox as a more stable choice

Any team without Van Basten is not worth considering

Maybe in your lifetime but he achieved nothing compared to Gerd Muller and Pele.:P

One of the problems when you are getting into your mid 50's Scott, there are a lot of players you can possibly pick from, and a lot of players who would miss out.

I just picked a team and missed out names like Puskas, di Stefano, Jairzinho, Yachin, Maier, Rivelinho, Baresi, Eusebio, Best, as examples (in fact it would have been easy to pick an equally good alternative World XI). When you are in your late teens/mid 20's you don't have so far to think back, trying to recall all the great players you have witnessed over a period of what, 52 years, isn't the easiest of things to do late on a Saturday night.

Agreed

Loss of brain cells due to alcohol probably means my 52 years represent about 107 as well, so I feel like I'm old enough to have seen Hibs win the cup

I forgot about Rivelhino - a 'first pick ' for me

.Batistuta Van Basten

..............Gullit

.........Hagi..... Senna*

.............Matthaeus

...Maldini Sammer Baresi Cafu

... ...............Kahn

Notable mentions to Baggio, Shearer, Crespo, Shevchenko, Romario and god knows how many fantastic strikers.

*Senna just pips Gattuso. Imo Senna is the best sitting/holiding midfielder in the world right now.
