Exactly.

The entire "first team in Europe" thing is a mere footnote in the history of Scottish football.

If that.

Look at the fuss they make over it, though.

Tinpot, indeed.

They finished 5th in the league. Aberdeen were champions.

Their chairman was head honcho at the SFA at the time.

The Swedish team they played, Djurdenans(excuse the spelling), played their home leg at St Johnstone's old Muirton Park I believe. So they didn't exactly travel far for that one😉

Djurgårdens played their home leg at Firhill due to the weather in Stockholm.

I knew they never played it in Sweden.

Meanwhile, what were Hearts up to in 1956? While Hibs won two ties against teams few can name, we won the big cup.

I disagree, but it’s also in a measure in our own hands. The conference league means that the rest of Scotland’s European contingent needs to start bringing in more coefficient points. We got 4 two years ago, Aberdeen got 5, we need to aim for 6. McInnes has done okay in Europe in the past and any points from Killie would be gravy.

Scotland is hurting because of a couple of absolutely terrible years by the OF but also no other teams are helping prop it up. We need to change that next season for our own good.

I, like most imagine, get most of my info from the Scottish Coefficient account on twitter.

Where do these numbers come from? They don't tally with anything I've seen anywhere else?

I may have just stated it clumsily. But the coefficients are on UEFA's website.

target need to be 5000 points this season.  Overtake the sheep. Am I right in saying the 2000 points they have form 19/20 will drop off as well?

It's 5.0 and 2.0, not 5,000 and 2,000, but yes. And aside from bragging rights the order isn't that important, but for our own interest we're being propped up by the 7.2 national average when we go to Europe. If we get above that, we start getting the prospect of better seeding in future years.

Many reasons entirely down to self-interest why we want to be getting 5-7 points in Europe every season. Yes it also helps all other Scottish teams, but not as much as it helps us.

Newcastle away would be a bit of a let down I think in terms of a trip.

I’m looking for sunshine pints on the continent and Valencia would tick that box. Augsburg would also be tremendous for Bavarian lager.

Would also swap Brann for Brondby and Bestikas for Vienna

Away in Minsk in December.... that's for the hard-core on many levels.

It's a massive if... but staying in the 4th pot would really help us I'm terms of potential qualifying.

This is exactly where I’m at, beer, sun, football and hopefully take in a great city. Another like Florence will do me.

There are no groups.  We get an opponent from all 6 pots and all 36 teams occupy one 36 team table.

Surprisingly modest pool of 36.  If we finish in the top 24 of 36 then we progress to knock-out stage.  We can absolutely do that from those teams.

Do we only play an opponent once and not home and away?

Yes.  3 home,  3 away.  1 from each pot,  including the one we're in.

Aiming higher if we win the playoff leg here’s the projected Europa league pots as they stand too. Some cracking trips and teams we could face in either competition

I think there is methodology to it.  Probably based on rankings / coefficient points.

Yip, I enjoyed the trips to London and Liverpool but it didn't really feel like Europe. It needs shorts and cafe culture  😄

11 points ahead with 15 left to play for. One win should realistically do it.

Great couple of seasons. Europe 3 times on the trot, 3rd, 4th, 3rd. And with a few smart signings who'd bet against us again next season 🇱🇻🇱🇻

Some of those potential away days would be unbelievable.

Marseille, Augsburg and Vienna would be ideal.

European qualification should really be the absolute minimum for our club. As much as it's great that we've qualified for the 3rd year in a row, it really highlights how much we've underperformed over the years, that it's the first time we achieved this. Every year we play in Europe we slowly chip away at enhancing our standing and reputation. Success builds success and hopefully this is the start of us cementing our place as a club that has euro football every season, like the old firm do. It's also great for the supporters 🙂

Would give us some very winnable fixtures, an excellent chance of progressing and some interesting places to visit for our three away days (although I'd rather avoid an away trip to TNS!)

Nah, everyone gets their own set of fixtures with one team from each pot including their own. So, for example, we could draw TNS from our pot and LASK could draw Marseille from theirs but LASK couldn't play both us and TNS as that would be two teams from Pot 4 and we couldn't play both LASK and Marseille as that's two from Pot 1.

It seems a faff but it's pretty simple when you get the old 'group stage' concept out your head.

Sounds a very complex draw to ensure everyone has just one team from each pot but I’m sure I’ll get my head round it eventually

Agree.  But it becomes really annoying that winning the Scottish Cup gets you the more lucrative third euro spot. Means in reality we have to win the cup or hope one of the OF does. Of course  splitting the OF or winning the league would solve everything..if only..

Agree.  If some team, either us or any other team, is consistently third for 3/4 years and some team other than the RanTic win the Cup, the team finishing third will miss out on Euro big money.   It's totally unfair that a team winning five games gets into a bigger Euro tourney.
