Quick question.  It’s been about 30 years since I was last up it.  Friends from up north want to visit and I see it’s now all by organised tours.

It says you can visit the ‘third floor’ viewing platform - is that the very top, really narrow one, I seem to remember that being the fourth?

I don't think the upper stairways would allow me access any more. It was awfy narrow when I went up as a skinny teenager and wasn't built for those of a more 'prosperous' frame.

I know what you mean!

My memory is that the first flight (in a ‘leg’) was fairly wide, the second flight got narrower, the third (in the centre of the monument) was wider and then the fourth was really narrow and people couldn’t cross so there was lots of going back up or down.

I took the bairns up to the top when they were younger. Not long before the 5-1 final, iirc.

It's certainly narrow at the top but not enough to cause problems. A bit of politeness and give and take with others will see you okay.

Ps.

They limit how many are in at one time to make sure there isn't a bottleneck.

Think I was 16 (over 45 years ago🥺) when I went up, right to the top.

It was really narrow, but what I really remember, ws a small step down onto the platform.

The whole height made me giddy and I actually had to hold on whilst taking the 6" step dowm

Can remember it as a kid, really claustrophobic and tight at the top. Would love to go back up again one day.

Is there any other food that changes its spelling mid-flight?

Went up it in my late teens. I was only about 8 stone at that time and seem to remember having to squirm my way out the access door at the top. My gut feeling is if you are any more that 10 stone, you might have trouble.
But then again, maybe it is my old brain playing tricks on me!

The Glenfinnan Monument is even worse - a low guardrail too.  Not really for the faint-hearted.

My most surreal moment was being at the top of the leaning tower of Pisa. Very disorientating to say the least.

I know the feeling. I would be fortunate to last long enough without having a heart attack going up the stairs!

Another though. HTF would the paramedics get you out of there if thathappened?😂

First time me and my mates went up to the top about 55 years ago some nutcase came screaming up the stairs shouting he was going to throw us over, nearly shat myself.

It's open now. Looks like you don't need to be on a tour.
