Was miles past his best when he got to us though. i remember a guy called Don Murray who was another cart horse of a centre back, a wee bit after Ernie’s time but in the same mood, although he was a centre half mostly I played a year at junior for Arniston Rangers and we played a Hearts 11 pre season once. I was a skinny wee 17 year old winger. Murray had just signed and we’d been warned about him. First 5 minutes and I’ve got the ball 30 yards out and face him up. He went right through me like a ton of bricks. I could barely walk for 3 weeks 😂 Don Murray stayed in Lithgae used to go out most Friday nights with Mrs Murray and get pished. Friend used to baby sit their kids said he came home in a right state regularly. Due to VAR Don Murray wouldn't be able to play nowadays. He was one dirty player. There could be a few fringe players from the late 40s or early 50s still alive. For some context of footballers reaching old age, Jimmy Millar of the Rangers passed away 15 months ago aged 88. He was one of many with degenerative brain impairment, due to the era of heavy leather balls. Freddie Glidden made it to 90 without the same suffering. SOme photos were posted on here about 10 years ago from the WIllie Bauld dinners. Amazing turnout by players from his era, most of them now gone. Jim Cruikshank, Chris Shevlane & Davie Holt. Football straps were so much simpler back in those days.
Schevchenko
There is a fella called Peter Smith who is from Mid Calder who played a few games for us in the 50's then Dave Mackay took his place. He then went to Dundee Utd and ended up an Alloa legend. I'm sure he is still with us and will be in his 80's. He is a top guy as well. jimbojambo
What a great thread . Davie Holt still goes to Queens Park games and he told me that he was offered a new contract and had arranged a new house then it was withdrawn by the board and he stayed in Glasgow. He said Tommy Walker was in tears telling him. I was at the Eintracht Frankfurt game and remembered a shot hitting the bar at the Gorgie Road end and Ernie blasting it in from a yard out on the volley. We were desperate for a hero back then and easily impressed. Edited February 1 by jimbojambo

Bickfest
I hope no-one minds, but this thread brings back a warm memory (not Hearts-related) for me. My grandfather, Patrick Mooney was born in 1887 in Salsburgh. A miner by trade, he was also, in his words, a no-nonsense, old-fashioned centre half. 6ft tall, fit as a flea but no silky smooth ball playing skills. He played professionally for Albion Rovers, Ayr United and, very briefly, for Arsenal. He also played for Celtic reserves. He was adamant he was never a "Celtic player" - you were only that in his mind if you played for the first team. Some time after they won the European Cup in 1967, Celtic organised a gala dinner to celebrate and all former players (including reserve players) were invited. At the event, a place was reserved at the top table for the then oldest former player, which happened to be my grandfather. Unfortunately, he was unable to go because of ill-health but it was a matter of great pride for him that he had been invited. We should never forget these guys. They are the heart and soul of our club, and of others.

He replied without hesitation Arthur Thomson. Thomson was not I think particularly dirty. He was a poor player lacking the skill to time or indeed execute a tackle. Red faced he looked angry and very unfit. His tackles were ill timed lunges and ineffective. But he was not dirty in the sense of being sneaky or underhand. I don't remember him causing career threatening injuries or indeed amassing too many red cards. His "tackles" generally not only missed the ball but usually the player too. PS not sure what he is doing on this thread. He died at the age of 53. Edited February 1 by Francis Albert
