I'd suggest he thought he was putting him in to a tie rather than knowing the voting wasn't right? On your last point about Ray I must admit I can't see anyone being that obvious on day 1 - especially if he's a goon. When I've been mason or goon before and we have a noob everyone tends to help and guide them through and game and help with voting. Maybe not though.
