:rofl:When I was at school it was 50p for a ticket for the benches at the very front. You were meant to wear school uniform, few did, and at assembly on the Friday before the game the Head would give strict orders to those going not to run on the pitch at full time again mostly ignored.

I was in the schoolboy enclosure for the 1984 Grand Slam game and, yes, ran onto the pitch. Pretty sure just about everyone did though! Was a great game to be at, but the thing I remember was seeing grown men crying on the pitch. It didn't mean that much to me as a 15 year old, but you could see how much it meant to them to win the first GS in almost 60 years. I thought those kind of things would come around regularly after that unfortunately...

Aye.

He was captain at the time and was on the Lions tour of S Africa during my time there.

Yeah he brought up a volleyball team to play us at St Thomas's around 1975/76.

Glasgow looking good against Racing.

No idea if Glasgow tired or Racing suddenly woke up but that was strange last 10 minutes.

It is a win but against stronger French teams or Irish teams, you need to cut out mistakes.

Switched off for the last 20 minutes, but game over at that point I suppose. They'll need to play the whole game against a Toulouse or Leinster though if they're going to have a chance.

I noticed earlier in the week that one of the coaches was saying they were contenders for the Champions Cup. Just the attitude they need, and they should be aiming high after winning the URC last season. Franco Smith is head and shoulders above his South African counterpart at Edinburgh. I wouldn't mind seeing Smith as the Scotland coach in the near future.

It doesn't look like Edinburgh's game in the Challenge Cup against RC Vannes is on Premier Sports today at 1pm, not even on their online stream.

Might be a fawanews stream or nothing today

Sums Edinburgh up. Ahead in game, get turnover and Jamie Ritchie passes out to backs who immediately stick a lazy hand out and knock on giving possession back.

The lack of cohesion is so frustrating

Sneaked it.  Some good defence at the end.

Careless play mostly though.

Well, at least Edinburgh put up a better fight than Sale Sharks have, 40 - 0 against the Stormers😥🤦

Beat the Georgian team, Black Lion, at home next week and Edinburgh will have a last 16 home tie at least, and beyond that too if they can progress and depending on seeding.

That will be important as they still have a terrible away record. Vannes rested quite a few players and still ran them close, even though they're not one of the better French teams.

The Scotland 6N squad is named tomorrow. I don't expect many surprises, but Tom English has suggested Saracens' NZ born fly-half, Fergus Burke, might be someone who could come in with a eye on the future at that position. He qualifies for both England and Scotland, but England didn't name him in their squad, so English makes a valid suggestion that Scotland should try and get in there first. As he says, Russell is now 32, so they need to start looking to the future. Burke is 25 and could be competition for Tom Jordan going forward.

I've not seen him play at all, so no idea if he's any good, but playing #10 for Saracens suggests he can play.

Tom English must have got insider info re Fergus Burke getting a call up. No real surprises beyond his selection though.

Although one surprise is Kyle Steyn not named in the squad, did he get injured at the weekend?

Needless to say, if I ever have the pleasure of meeting him again I'll still address him as "sir".

Glasgow visit Harlequins tonight on Premier Sports 1 at 8pm with a win needed by the Quins to ensure a last 16 spot in the Champions Cup. Glasgow already have a home tie in last 16 wrapped up, but will be wanting a win to get a higher seeding in the knockout stages.

Edinburgh play Georgia's Black Lion at home tomorrow at 1pm, with it being shown live on Premier Sports streaming channel. They've already qualified for the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup, but a win would get them a home tie in the last 16 and a higher seeding for potential home ties beyond that. Black Lion have an outside chance of making the knockout stages if they can get a bonus point win. Surely a bonus point win for Edinburgh is on the cards....but which Edinburgh will show up!

'quins all over Warriors in the first 20 minutes.

What a try that was 😮

PortyJambo

That was fairly poor from Glasgow last night. I don't know if it was because they'd already qualified, or if it was Quins needing the win more, or a mixture of both, but they weren't at their best.

Also, I see a lot of Glasgow supporters moaning because Matthews isn't in the Scotland squad but, based on his line out throwing, I can see why he's not being considered. He may score a lot of tries from mauls and he is mobile with ball in hand, but his game apart from that has some holes. Plus, are tries from line out mauls really that much on who stands at the back of them with the ball, or is it the ones in front that are doing all the work...

Red card for Edinburgh....

They have a 24-3 lead, but still over a half to go

PortyJambo
Posted

Try bonus point secured for Edinburgh, that should be enough with a 31-3 lead to secure a home quarter final IF they can get through a home last 16 tie. They're currently seeded 3rd in the rankings for the last 16 by virtue of sitting top of their pool, behind Connacht and Montpellier who have won their pools with more points than Edinburgh.

PortyJambo

Two tries added by Edinburgh to make it 36-3 whilst Black Lion were also down to 14 due to a yellow card. That should be game over as the Georgians aren't coming back from that deficit even with an extra man again.

PortyJambo
Posted

Black Lion are determined not to have an extra man due to Edinburgh's red card, as they keep getting yellows for repeated infringements to level the playing field again

PortyJambo

That could be another red card for Edinburgh...

Edit - looks like the ref is letting them off with just a yellow. It didn't look much different than the first red

Straightforward enough for Edinburgh, winning 36-15 in the end after letting up a couple of late tries when down to 13. Lot of cards, for both sides, it wasn't 15 aside for very long...

Currently, it looks like a home game against Leicester for Glasgow in the last 16 of the Champions Cup. Leicester were hammered 80-12 by Toulouse today to miss out on a home last 16 tie.

Edinburgh's reward for getting a home tie in the last 16 of the Challenge Cup looks like currently being a visit from the Lions from Johannesburg. On paper a tough tie, but the SA teams often field weakened teams in Europe, so we'll see.

Still one game to be completed, Sale-Toulon, which might have an effect on who qualifies for both tournaments and in what seeded position.

So, Champions Cup last 16 are set:

6 French teams left, but probably their 4 best ones are all in top half of draw

5 English teams left, but 4 of them are bottom seeds and have tough away games that they won't be favourites in. Northampton though have one of the easier routes to the semi-finals at least in the bottom half of the draw

3 Irish teams left with Leinster, as usual, the pick of them. They could meet Northampton in the semi

And, of course, 1 Scottish and 1 Italian team left. Glasgow should make the quarter finals...then play Leinster, and Benetton might have another shock in them yet after beating La Rochelle yesterday

Couldn't have asked for a worse start, or before the start, than losing two key players like Tuipulotu and Cummings. I guess McDowall will come in for Sione, and he's a good player but not as good or key as Tuipulotu. Cummings is a bit easier to replace but it means we've got less depth there now for when, not if, other players get injured.

It's a shame for Tuipulotu and the Lions as well, as not being able to play in the 6N will affect his chances there too.

A 23 year old Australian born no.8, Alexander Masibaka, who plays in the French 2nd division has been called up to the Scotland squad. He's got a Scottish mother and Fijian father, hence qualifying for Scotland. I've never heard of him, but he's on Montpellier's books apparently, and is on loan to the 2nd division team where he has a good try scoring record.

A few others called up as well to cover for the raft of injuries the squad is getting, locks Cameron Henderson and Ewan Johnson, plus fullback Ollie Smith is back in the squad after returning from injury, and back row forward Euan Ferrie has been added.

I'm expecting there to be a lot of comings and going from the squad over the course of the 6N if the start of it is anything to go by

I see England's Henry Pollock has been saying he wouldn't mind playing for Scotland "at some time". He's got Scottish parents and supported them when he was younger, but then got into the England age group squads, and now their full squad. However, he's been named in their U20 team, so likely won't play for the senior squad this 6N unless there are injuries.

He's be a good one to poach if he gets frustrated with not playing for the senior team. Unlikely, as he's very highly rated, but still...

Just typical when Scotland were looking in a good position to get these injuries.

Still pretty open the 6 Nations though.

Always laugh at how confident the English are.

This, I think, partly because of the home and away fixture line-up.  I'd have put Scotland third and in a serious scrap for second before recent injuries.  The way things are now it wouldn't in the least surprise me to see Scotland just about beating Ireland, Ireland just about beating England, and England just about beating Scotland. 🤷‍♂️

Also, it feels weird to be guessing at Italy not finishing sixth.

France, England then it's a lottery.

Zero belief in our coach , who should've been sacked after the Rome collapse.

I'm positive we beat Italy & Wales. If we don't, Townsend should be sacked immediately after final whistle.

I'm hopeful that we beat Ireland as it's the weakest they've been for years but our record against them is shit. The Glasgow players though have no fear of playing Irish teams so their attitude should rub off on rest of guys.

We have had measure of England for a few years and I'm 50/50 on that continuing. They flatter to deceive too often and like Scotland, their coach isn't the best.

I think France will be too strong for us in Paris and if they beat Ireland in Dublin, then they'll win tournament.

Might be last 6 nations on BBC as rumours abound TNT sports will grab it next season along with possibly ITV. It's only highlights that have to be shown on terrestrial TV which would be a massive disappointment if it happens.

That move to ay viewing could also see South Africa involved to make 7 nation tournament as they would enable more money to be made.

I was fairly confident that we'd do well but losing Sione T has left me gutted! France are probably favourites and anything can happen with the rest.

I'm off to Aus for 3 weeks in July/Aug to watch 3 games with the Lions so looking forward to that!
