After months and months of my dog being sad at 14 the vet has advised its time to go in on Wednesday for his injection.

His digestive system has went to pot.

What do you give your best pal?

Gutted for you mate. Happened to us 3 days ago. Vet reccomended it was the kindest thing. Take the day off, stay in bed and have a good cry.

Never Let Them Forget

We put our Weimaraner to sleep two years ago it’s the most heartbreaking thing we have ever done. Strangely enough it was also really nice and peaceful the way it was at the vets he just fell asleep looking at me 😢 as we knew he wasn’t in pain it really is the best thing to do.

As we put him to stud and took a pup it was very easy to continue our everyday routine, I would imagine it would be far harder if you don’t have another one at home to continue that. Anyway sorry to hear this ❤️

Hardest thing I have ever had to do is put dogs down. Just awful and it never gets easier.

If only humans could be treated with such dignity however. Whilst it is a painful and awful thing to have to go through the thought they are no longer in pain is kind of in its own way a comfort.

Take great pride that you gave that dog 14 great years and the memories will be with you forever.

Sorry you have to go through this.

I wasn't prepared for how bad it would be.  Hardest thing I've ever done and can't even get another one as I couldn't go through that again

Knew I had given mine the best life I could've but still the loss was beyond anything.

Can't give enough condolences.

Cheers guys, trying not to think about tomorrow but can't get the "this will be the last time" feeling around everything today.

Big walk to the normal place so far going to get him a big steak later :)

Was peaceful in the end.  He had a really good day and a great scran for lunch with no consequences.  Really does feel like a family bereavement.

Really sorry to read your story RT. Have said it before, the hardest but yet the most loving thing you can ever do for your best friend.

The bond is such a strong one that that is exactly how it feels.

  • 1 year later...

We gave him a huge cuddle and his favourite squeaky tennis ball and a Jumbone were cremated with him too. I'll never get another dog. Far too much heartache when they go.

I'll be asking for an injection each when it comes the time for my dog to go. Its either that or i jump in the river with a rucksack full of rocks afterwards. Not sure if I'm joking.

I felt like this when my dog died, it was absolutely devastating. I loved him so much, had him from when I was a bairn so it was a big moment for my when all of my childhood pets had died. I had 2 cats and a dog, was also devastated when my cats died. I live on my own now, and while I probably do have enough time for a dog now that I work from home full time, I’m not willing to give a dog the time it needs. I got two kittens just before the lockdown happened and without them I probably would have lost my mind more than I did at the time.

It’ll be sad when they’re gone, but pets, in general offer so much in life that I probably would get another pet once their time here is done.

The kindest thing and put her/him out of their pain.

I have had the misfortune to face upto this four times in my adult life.

The last time was right at the start of the Covid lock down, so had to hand over Myles at the back door of the vets on Bread Street, which was the worst to date, only as I couldn't go into the vets with him.

Difficult as it is, you are doing the right thing.

My dog Rudi was diagnosed with cancer back in April last year, and that was bad enough to get through. Here we are coming up for a year later and after some tough treatment and times ,he is still going strong and as happy as ever. Dogs are fantastically resilient and deal brilliantly with whatever is in front of them.

God knows how I am going to deal with the day when it does come though, been my best Buddy for the last ten years

Been down this road with four of my dogs over the years. It never gets any easier. Been there for them every time. It’s heart breaking. You know instinctively when you have to make the decision for them.  It’s a dogs only fault that they don’t have long lives.

Went through this 6 months ago with mine. She was 17 still acting like 7 and then convulsions started.

I held her all the way through, talked to her, stroked her hair and she slipped away quietly.

Its a hard thing to do to be there throughout but I felt she was comforted by me being there.

Thats the best advice.

I held 8 out of 12 Guinea Pigs as they slipped away.   Because it allowed them to feel loved and cared for, it also allowed the others around to say goodbye too.

As others have said, the sadness  & pain at having to have your beloved dog (or cat) put to sleep is beyond anything you could imagine.     Gut-wrenching, consumed by grief, with a dollop of guilt that you should probably have done it sooner.

Let the tears flow.   Take some comfort that you've given your pet a good home and companionship.  He/she has repaid you 10 times over by filling your life with  loyalty & affection.

Then gradually ask yourself - whats more important, avoid having to go through this pain again .... or give a good life to another  dog (or cat) stuck in an animal shelter ?   Your heart will give you an answer.

I had a great dane once, she was a beautiful big thing, had her own couch, it was stinking.

She would run off after rabbits at night and do massive shits during the day.

Yeah, she was more my girlfriends dog, not much training going on, and women are women, you can't get through to them.

One thing I would advise is stay with your pet while the injection is administered.

The vet was surprised when I asked to stay with my wee dog. She said virtually every owner in her experience had waited outside.

Me walking away and leaving her was not the last thing my dog was going to see.

As painful as it was it brought me great comfort in the immediate aftermath, and to this day, that I held and spoke to my wee pal as she slipped away.

The vet's trainee assistant, a young lassie about 18, was in floods of tears.

Btw, that late night visit to the vet was the same day as Hearts 1-3 ICT in the Cup.

What a feckin day.

I've never thought that getting a dog is for me but I've had my sister's Golden Retriever for the last week as she's away on holiday with a week to go and I'm not sure I want to hand him back.

I got bitten on the arse by a dog when I was wee, and grew up with cats, so I was the same, just never thought it was for me.

**** me, was I wrong! There are LOADS of gorgeous scared wee things with uncertain futures. All they need is a good guy in their life, they'll repay you 10 times over every day.

I've had my first dog a year and a half now, one of the best decisions I ever made

Had dogs and cats all life. Both wonderful creatures.

Dogs are ridiculously clever and loyal if you treat them well.
