Historical Tweets/Posts on Social Media

I saw this regarding an English Cricketer, Ollie Robinson, being suspended from the England Cricket Team due to 'racist and sexist' tweets when he was 18/19 years old

Ollie Robinson tweets: England seamer apologises for historical racist and sexist posts - BBC Sport

We all do things in our youth that we may regret at some point :), so is it a warning to the current crop of teenagers that you should think twice about posting such stuff, as it could damage a promising career in the years to come, or is this type of punishment over the top?

Completely over the top.

People change.

If he makes it clear that he was a stupid wee bam and recants, then he should be reinstated.

People make mistakes and if they can prove they've learned from them, then forgiveness should be given.

If, however, evidence of continued, recent arsehole behaviour is found then that's another matter.

ECB have performed a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction because they think they have to be seen to be doing something.

It should either be routine at the time of hiring someone, since companies and, especially, entertainment or sponsored endeavours like sport, are extremely adverse to bad publicity or should not be carried out. People with bankruptcies or criminal records have those espunged after "X" years so perhaps the same should apply to social media posts?

Mind you, when Toby Young's disgusting posts on education ("disabled students clutter up the place" for example, which he retrospectively justified as him having an "agent provocateur persona"*) came back to bite him when he started mass deleting his post history on twitter when offered the position as a Tory Education Csar. Can't say I felt sorry for this ******* not getting that post, considering his Daddy got him in to University as he was too thick to qualify on his own merits.

*excuse for being an opinionated gobshite

That's exactly what he's done, Cade. I thought he showed great humility.

Absolutely this. How far back do you go? Early/mid 80s I was singing The Sash in the shed with the rest of them. Eff the pope this and eff the pope that. Gordon Rae is known to be gay...etc..etc. Now I would be sacked instantly from my job if I came out with that nonsense and ultimately it is juvenile nonsense. We were all young and daft and impressionable. Then you grow up (most of us).

Correct. One of my mates who threw a banana at Mark Walters from the shed when he was 13 grew up to be a black man. Mental.

I think that's the problem with social media.

You have a 'profile' and what you post on that is meant to be a reflection of you. The trouble is, the posted content seemingly lives forever and some people have been on a social media site for decades.

People do change and I think historical posts no longer said could be proof of that. Though these incidents suggest higher profile people should perhaps do some housekeeping on their public profile if some posts no longer reflects them.

He was a  later age teenager when he posted those tweets so was an adult . He knew what he was tweeting was probably sexist and racist . Either he is both and is thick too . Or all 3 ! He’s only regretting it cause it might impact on his endorsements or career . Saying that he “appears “ to be contrite so he can have the benefit of the doubt from me .

Wish social media would just get itself to **** in all honesty.  I also wish the people who go about looking for these things and bringing them to light would do one as well.

EVERYONE at some point in their life has either said something, thought something, found something amusing or let something said by another pass, that is not "acceptable".  This guy was stupid enough to write it down for the world to see but it's the double standards in it all that I just can't be arsed with.

Very vast and difficult topic to grasp. Wish it had never been invented.

Probably an overreaction by the ECB, however if they weren't seen to be doing something they'd get accused of condoning his behaviour, and the campaigners would be kicking up blue murder, the ECB were pretty much damned if they do, damned if they dont.

Your post was neither playing Devil's advocate or giving the benefit of the doubt. You added the last sentence because you knew the rest of your post went against every other viewpoint on the thread. It's obvious what your views are, own them.

Try reading it again and you'll maybe see that your last sentence has no place in that post.

Cue slightly camp gif.

Basically, anyone in the public eye and every job candidate should be forced - prior to every appearance - to disclose the following:

- all social media accounts

- all current and previous political ideas

- football allegiances

- thoughts on Brexit

- a list of everything they've jacked off to on porn hub

- preferred pronouns

Nobody would ever get hired. 😄

I’m sure every single one of us said something that would be frowned upon nowadays when we were 18.

Overreaction in my opinion but once again shows the dangers of having a social media account.

why anybody would go on these platforms baffles me. Unless your talking about your cat, your tea or your favourite soap opera then chances are you’ve posted something that will be frowned upon. Absolutely no good comes from it IMHO

Since your mid-teens, have said or done anything you now regret, that you would argue against now, and feel a bit miffed if it ended up threatening your career?

It’s hard not to feel for the guy. It seems to have been blown out of all proportions, he’s apologised for his actions from 10years ago. There’s not really much more he can do. He can’t change the past.

If ECB had discovered these tweets prior to his selection, what would they have done? Not selected him due to his past, announced they were selecting a player who has some dodgy tweets, undertook a clean operation prior to him being selected?

I don’t use social media, one of the main reasons I don’t want something to come back and bite me I’m the future. I do have it to follow the kids and make sure they’re ok on it.

Will be interesting to see if his career manages to recover.

But what constitutes "dodgy" tweets, or dodgy behaviours?

What if he posted something about Israel/Palestine? Pro-Brexit? Should James McLean be suspended by the FA for his pro-IRA tweets?

The England batting coach, Graham Thorp, is a UKIP member who walked out on his wife and 4 kids after a string of extra-marital affairs? Is that acceptable? Not to some.

What about the MCC? An organisation that only allowed women in 23 years ago. I reckon loads of those old duffers involved in that vote still enjoy the comforts of the Lords pavilion - we need to release the details of that vote in 1998 (to admit women) and kick out those who voted against it).

I reckon that most folk have at least one whatsapp group chat that would see them fired, beaten up, locked up, strung up, and cancelled.

What passes as crass humour amongst consenting adults doesn't necessarily represent the actual views of those involved. Quite the opposite sometimes.

This is the problem with social media. It's too easy to carry over some satirically offensive nonsense from one forum into another with an entirely different audience.

And when you do there's no going back. Ever.

Going by jkb, folk just don't spot sarcasm or light bamming up. Too serious are some folk on here. Which sometimes leads to me saying to myself "Feck this" Then it's gloves off.
