Don Dan
The wife NHS Nurse just received this about parties etc Take note Clown Shoes Minimising the impact of the Omicron Variant As with last year, I am asking staff to pay particular attention to staying Covid-19 safe during the festive season. This is to help us maintain safe health and social care services and to support you to have a good Christmas with your families. The emergence of the new Omicron variant which has been confirmed as even more transmissible than the current dominant Delta variant is a particular concern which will inevitably impact on our services as it already has done in other areas of the NHS in Scotland, often because of staff parties. In NHS Lothian there are already some examples of service impact arising from team parties. Given the concerns about the rate of transmission of the new variant, national guidance has been varied to indicate that those who have been in contact with someone with the Omicron variant will require a 10-day isolation period since the last contact with that person. This applies even if the individual has had a complete course of vaccination, is asymptomatic and has a negative PCR test result. These criteria previously allowed staff to return to work if the person they had been in contact with had the Delta variant of Covid-19 but are currently not possible for Omicron. We are also anticipating a rise in Covid-19 cases in schools resulting in teachers and pupils having to self-isolate which will put added pressure on staff managing childcare issues. When combined, these will put further pressure on our services which as you know are already finding it difficult and this pressure is likely to increase in the coming weeks. I appreciate after the pressures of the last twenty months you will be keen to celebrate the festive season with colleagues. I understand this but would strongly urge you to think carefully whether this is as important to you as being able to safely spend Christmas or New Year with your close family and friends. It is important that we take additional measures to keep ourselves and health and social care services as safe as possible at this time. To minimise the further spread of Covid-19 please consider the following: Speak to your colleagues and friends about the possibility of postponing any festive parties and arranging to have it in 2022. Limit the number of social contacts you have, especially with those who may be vulnerable, consider having online parties or meeting in small groups and avoid crowded areas with lots of other Christmas or New Year parties. If you are asymptomatic undertake twice weekly tests with the available Lateral Flow Devices and record your result. You should also perform a test before you socialise. If your test is positive do not attend the event, self -isolate and take a PCR test. If you are symptomatic, self -isolate and take a PCR test. Do not attend events if someone you live with has symptoms of COVID -19 or has tested positive. Consider outdoor activities which have less risk of transmission than indoor activities although I realise that this may not be possible during winter. Staff are allowed to bring in food from home to consume outwith clinical areas. However, shared and buffet style eating is not advisable and physical distancing should be applied when masks are removed for eating. Avoid the use of shared crockery and cutlery. Remember to wear a face covering in line with guidance, keep your distance, keep rooms ventilated, and regularly wash your hands with soap and water. If you have not yet had two doses of Covid-19 vaccine, please arrange to be vaccinated. If you have had two doses, please arrange to get a booster dose if your second dose was more than three months ago. I appreciate this is a big ask, but this will help us to minimise the risk of whole teams contracting Covid-19 at the same time, putting added pressure on colleagues who remain and our ability to offer safe, quality patient services throughout this period of uncertainty as we try to understand the full impact the Omicron variant will have on us all. Thank you for all your continued efforts throughout this challenging year.

Victorian
To be honest, I can't blame people for not believing the perceived risks from omicron. Certainly not the people who don't pay as much attention to events as most on here do. People aren't seeing any first hand evidence of much to be concerned about. They're seeing or hearing about the anecdotal evidence about mild symptoms and no deaths, etc. Who can blame people for not buying it? Some experts are insisting that clinical evidence wont appear until the infections take their full course. That's perfectly logical and reasonable. But other people said that the consequences will tend to be better for the longer it takes to evaluate what's actually happening. No news is good news, so to speak. The latest snippet out of South Africa is the possibility of a slowing wave. Already. The possibility that latest daily figures have dipped under the projected exponential graph. By a twist of irony, if this alert does come to little, all and sundry will be furious about the gloomy forecasts. Lots of people wont believe a single word from now on. We'll take it though. It's more accurate to say that they have evolved. Mutated, you might say. One main reason why we're being told to hide away again, despite tipping up for vaccinations is... the 5 million who haven't come forward. Victorian
The government doesn't care about an individual coming a cropper through refusing to protect themselves with a vaccine. It doesn't give a monkeys. It does care about a very large number of individuals acting similarly. Why? Because it may represent a risk towards everyone else. The unvaccinated will not be protected by the government. Everybody equally will be protected by the government. If the unvaccinated posed no risk to everyone else, the government would happily allow them to choose the path of their destiny.
