Even though the GG is a symbolic position, with almost no powers, if the job was handed to a foreigner like Harry, people would be asking "wtf?"

The republic question is more interesting.  While there is some feeling that getting rid of the monarchy is the way forward, people here tend to look at the political shambles in the USA and say, "Nah, let's stick with what we have."

It's a bit more than symbolic ML. I'd agree that on the surface it appears symbolic, but underlying that are very real reserve constitutional powers -- including, but not limited to, dismissals of governments in a constitutional impasse.

Even during this current Australia-wide bushfire hell, the GG had to 'sign-off' Australian (Commonwealth) military personnel being allowed to deploy to the states/territories affected, aka 'Defence Aid to Civil Community'.

I'd imagine the same situation would apply to Canada and its provinces/terrirories.

I heard a bit of a program yesterday, a woman was explaining some of the things that affect Harry as a Royal. They are not allowed to work for any company at all, they cannot accept free things such as homes giftes etc. There were numerous other rules which I missed because the second period of the Canucks game had started, but the gist of what I got from it is if Harry sincerely wants the independence he suggests any direct relationship or connection with them restricts what he can do as an independent person. However I can see although don't agree with it the Queen or her minions cannot allow it to be seen that there is any defiance of her orders, to wit  resigning from Royal connections and duties.

The boss has issued her statement

 in full:

"Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.

"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

"Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.

"It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.

"These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days."

Sounds a pretty reasonable statement. As I mentioned in a previous post the ability to just discard and get free of the public funds is a bit complicated so might take time to get done.

With Harry I see some similarities as there were for Princess Margaret, they were raised with a sibling who some day was going to be King or Queen, their own position was that they had no more chance of succession than you or I, not withstanding they still had a pretty good income available.

Margaret loved Peter Townsend and was restricted from doing so because of his divorced status. Harry was serving in combat in Afghanistan and televised interviews from a combat zone to me indicated he enjoyed being with the boys and being a soldier. Like his late aunt his position in life stopped him from doing that.To his credit his efforts and time spent on behalf of disabled veterans has been creditable. He had no choice in his place manner or status of birth. He does now seem to have the ability to make some decisions and again I give him credit for what he is trying to do.

The University there has built up a solid reputation for marine biology. That's the only reason I've ever heard of the place.

Didn't know that.  It's fairly land-locked, though!  Our local high school had an exchange with the collegiate school a few yrs back - all had a good time.  Otherwise only knew it as a university town.

I know I'm adding to it but I can't believe there are enough sane people on kickback who give a toss about the royals to have a 5 page thread on this

But this thread isn't about independence. And what's with the "loonball" chat? I may be pro-independence now, but I still respect the opinions of those who aren't. Do you call anyone who doesn't agree with you a "loonball"? Do you not see how that is Neanderthal, primary school-type thinking? It's a shame to see you behaving that way, I'm sure that you're better than that.

A very fine lady, shocked to find out she is 46, a year older than me.

As for Harry and Meghan, i'm nonplussed about the royals but i do appreciate that what H&M have done is wind up the ****wits to the point of explosion.  That's something to be proud of.

Good point. I just cannot see how any right thinking person can think it would be a good thing for our country.

Again off topic. Apologies.

Fecking fecked up press and sick world that so called decent human beings can come out and defend Prince Andrew  just because they are Monarchists and dont like it up em..  Weird ....and fecking scary at the same time

Spot on. How can a guy who wants to take it easy, with his mixed-race wife, be taking all of the heat when his nonce uncle (who's also chosen to take a step back) goes unmentioned by our wonderful press.

Deeply unpleasant.

It’s very blatant but they do this politically all the time too. They give Nicola Sturgeon or Corbyn much the same and Starmer will be next.
Their readers are too dumb to notice though.

JIMMY KRANKIE LOLOLOLOLOL

Its hopefully soon to die on its arse as a news product as they make most of their money from idiots clicking on bikini pictures of actresses and Rita Ora. SHOWCASED HER STUNNING CURVES etc etc.

Fair play to Harry for growing tired of the UK being racist as **** to his wife whilst the, actually free loading Ms Middleton, gets a smooth ride. Id bin it all off as well.

I'm now reading reports that Frogmore Cottage is being shuttered-up and staff redoployed/let go. This, after a renovation cost of £2.4 million paid out from the Sovereign Grant. How many of us plebs would be in a position to effectively write-off £2.4m of other peoples' money?

Maybe it should be repurposed as a safe haven for traumatised people? Not going to happen though, is it?

The Royals, if nothing else, are consistently generous to their own. I don't have a problem with that, providing the largesse is splashed from their 'own' private wealth, eg, the Duchy of Cornwall.
