Far too many missing what he does.

Indeed - thousands of Hearts fans who attend games miss what he does!

There was a point where Clare was fouled early on, looked a nasty challenge worth a yellow minimum.  He had won the ball in our half, and didn’t back down in the challenge.  Nasty foul.

Behind me all I hear is “Get up Clare”. We should have been shouting for a red card, instead we have that from our own fans. Sometimes we are a tough crowd.

One of 4 stand out players today. I see no player ratings thread so Smith, Clare, the big man and Berra all 8. Everyone else 6s bar Hickey who gets 3/10. Out of position a lot of the game but the next few years will be where shit gets real for the kid. If he really wants it then he will make it but today will hopefully be a lesson for him. Perhaps needs dropped. We would've been better without him today.

I’m not his biggest fan but think I can react accordingly. (My mates might argue differently😁).

Plenty around me gave him a clap at that point and encouraged him to keep getting stuck in. Fans will react positively to any player if they see persistence, not flitting in and out and sometimes being brave, then sometimes not.

It was a big game so you expect every player to naturally be up for it. As we know, the criticism comes in the matches where we become the favourites and the underdogs play as we did yesterday.

Just to put this point to bed.
I am certain Levein had instructed Clare not to mark Rangers leftback. Remember the game he said we managed to restrict them to possession out wide as he believed we could handle any crosses. Very scary tactic in my mind but one he uses. Reason I am so sure was the Rangers guy was standing right next to Levein at one point in tons of space. Levein looked at him and Clare further infield and didn’t shout a thing (where he had been speaking to Clare just before).
sometimes we give a player pelted for not doing what we believe to be right but he is following instructions. In this case, I think Clare was sticking to the plan. That was pretty much all I was annoyed about with Clare yesterday but likely not to have been his call.

My “agenda” which is shared by very many Hearts fans is that Clare does not offer enough to the team, he disappears in games, and does not deserve a starting slot in the team virtually every week.

The game against Rangers did not change that opinion.

I would give Uche a 9 as I thought he was a standout yesterday. What a difference he makes to the team.

A lot of fans know feck all about football but they're the ones that think they're experts on the game and are the ones that shout the loudest.

He's been slagged off on here by some who say he didn't support Uche closely enough and then others chip in saying he didn't support Hickey enough.

Let's just agree that he's the easy scapegoat for some to to vent their spleen over and at the same time get another dig in against Levein.

Levein and Clare were both excellent yesterday.

Suck it up!

The big felly left nothing in the dressing room, took absolutely everything out on to the park with him.  As a fan, I simply can’t ask for anything else regardless of the score.  He has a good footballing brain as many players his size would not draw the foul as much and would see many red cards.  I like him an awful lot.

Fair play to you.

I was groaning when I saw Clare on the team sheet, but he didn't let us down yesterday.  He needs to kick on, but won a few balls in the air, won a few tackles, did ok yesterday.  Shame he was fouled after getting past two of the Rangers players and heading in on goal, and that Whelan made a horse's arse of the free kick.

Agreed he was immense and Clare also got pass marks which is unusual but shows it's in him. He just has to produce now week in week out.

Pasquale for King

I thought he had one of his better games, great cross for Uche to hit the bar. He wasn’t tracking back as much as I would like but the tactic seemed to leave him and Mulraney up the pitch at times to expose the gaps.

We def offered up space out wide.

One which annoys me is when supoorters shout for players to be marked out wide when the ball is on the other side of the pitch. 10/15 yards inside is where you should be seeing as the ball will need to travel 60 yards to get there and he could eadily run inside or straight by you, without your recovery angle, should a throughball be played.

But "ffs Clare, get close to your man".

Its up there with "put a foot in" when a full back is jockeying a winger. Gut wrenching!

And there is the post of a lifelong LB/LM!!!

Clare played well yesterday. He worked his arse off for the team, did all the right things and put the foot in.

The boy doesn’t deserve the constant grief he gets.

It's a fair point. It was the same as at one point in the first half mulraney stopped back tracking and was ready to play high for the counter.

It's impossible to press for 90mins and was clear levein rotated the pressing which is not a bad tactic when trying to play on the break at home (assuming you don't lose a goal from that side 😂).

Pity we ended up lumping the ball up top in second half.

You're right. There is no hope for some who only seem to be happy when slagging off our own players.

My tongue in cheek comment re. Hickey only shows them up for what they are.

The comments on this forum about Clare have just been downright disgusting.

Really? I’ve seen him take plenty stick but can’t think of any downright disgusting comments.
My worthless tuppence worth is he was better against Rangers than he’s been mostly this season but we need more from him like that and much more regularly.
Nobody wants him to fail.

No sorry Clare was not excellent he played ok in spells but still goes missing far too much

There was a large hole in his area for most of the second half he should be linking the play but where was he ?

Maybe he was excellent to his usual dross but come on give me peace saying he was excellent

Thought Clare played well yesterday and in the second half was working his arse off.

Much like us gaining a point yesterday, I hope he can build on it.

I’m glad someone else noticed this. If this hadn’t been part of the tactics do you not think that Berra, Smith and Whelan  our most experienced and senior players would have not been quick to get him told to get over and mark the rangers player.

Transpires that Clare has been seeing a sports psychologist to try and help him deal with the pressure and scrutiny.  Fair play to him.  Don’t think I’ve wanted a player to succeed as much as him.  Comes across as a cracking young lad, with his head screwed on who’s clearly very popular within the squad.

Totally agree.

This is why the constant negativity towards them is a bit baffling.

They have shown before they can hit this level, but against smaller teams haven't done so often. Surely we should be encouraging them as we know they can do it.

Any chat about them being poor level, or constantly saying Craig can't manage is chronic. A drop in form and levels needs our support. But then that's just my approach to life.

In this brave new tweeting and Instagram era it seems preferable to be a complete fanatic on these things and go far to far in terms of abuse.

We should have a Support Hearts day once a year on kickback where only posts that are positive and supporting of the team are allowed.

Give it 5,4,,3,2,1 before someone sticks the boot in for him using one unfortunately, despite thousands and thousands of sports professionals over the world using them.

I'm not a big fan of Clare either, but more of what we saw on Sunday and he'll win the fans around as he was very good. What a difference when players actually get played in their proper positions.

Absolute Scenes

I think he is slowly improving. The evening news story about him seeing a psychologist makes it real how hard criticism can be for footballers and rightly so. I wouldn't like thousands of folk screaming at me when I misplace a pass! Hope he continues to progress and is given room by fans to develop. He's still young remember.

Really good interview with Clare and how he is trying to change his mindset while working with a specialist. the same one that has helped Jake as well. I understand we all moan about players performances but its important to remember they are people who are not immune to the pressure/abuse they get.

I remember listening to Jimmy Calderwood being interviewed, and he was asked about player performance - how important is skill relative to fitness and confidence?  Calderwood said 10% skill, 10% fitness, 80% confidence.

Fair play to Clare, he's taking steps to improve, and there's still a stigma about seeing psychologists so credit due for that too.

Agree with you.

Excellent interview from a great young guy who’ll prove to be an outstanding asset to Hearts, I believe.
