alicante jambo
Commentators no making excuses for the penalty miss. Kane waited 2 minutes before he could take the penalty. It is because, well, "who are yer? Who are yer?" But it isn't because, before the country broke up, the biggest under-achievers in world football by a country mile were Yugoslavia. Everyone remembers the side which might well have won Euro 92 if only they'd been allowed to play. But as a country, they had incredible talent for decades on end: it's just that, very like the Pakistan cricket team or plenty of French rugby teams, you had no idea what you were gonna get from one game to the next. They had no idea themselves either. Take that immense talent and technique. Then add nationalistic fervour and the pride of being a small country which only recently won independence, and wants desperately to announce itself to the world. And you can see immediately why Croatia - despite God-awful administrators - have been so successful across various sports. Serbia are too, albeit they're still chronic underachievers in football. Slovenia and Bosnia have had their moments... and now, here come Kosovo.

When it comes to picking 22 players even the smaller countries can rustle up a decent squad. If you look at their squad they all play at a similar level to our players. They have no-one at as big clubs as Liverpool and Man Utd but overall many of their players play at good levels in Italy, England, Belgium, Turkey, Switzerland. The thing that stands out for me looking at Kosovo's squad is they have 8 players 22 or under. I think we've got 1 or 2. This is why we're falling behind IMO. We're really slow at promoting youth. Even England have around 10 players in their squad under 22.

Do England see Mexico and Colombia, or Yugoslavia for that matter, as rivals? No, they see Germany, Argentina, France, etc as their rivals. Even us, their actual local rivals, actually have a very decent overall record vs them over the decades considering the vast disparity in size and football wealth! And we actually had a better record at qualifying for tournaments for a while there in the 80s, early 90s. 5 in a row or something. We even did better than them in a Finals in 1992. Ever us, their actual local rivals, actually have a very decent overall record vs them over the decades considering the vast disparity in size and football wealth! Indeed you do. But it's a total irrelevance now. Is our overall record pathetic? Sure. In World Cup terms, it's top eight but no more than that. But then, that's kinda inevitable given we still had 11-year-olds running around on full size pitches until earlier this decade - and given the historic tendency in our league for the big hoof and football at 1000 mph. Is that changing now? Slowly, yes - with the biggest reason being the influence of brilliant foreign managers. Guardiola helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup. Guardiola and Klopp helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup. And Guardiola, Klopp and Pochettino have helped England become a good side again... if one with still plenty to do if it's to cross the huge chasm separating semi-finalists and winners.
