All roads lead to Gorgie

I was driving around the Assynt area of Sutherland and Wester Ross earlier this summer whilst listening to the Mogwai album ' Every Countries Sun' and somehow the stark mountain landscape and the bands quiet and soaring tracks just seemed to match perfectly what I was seeing.

Now there are obvious other bands who could give you that feeling such as Sigur Ros if you were exploring around Iceland or maybe Kraftwerk around industrial Germany, America with its diverse music choices gives endless possible matches.

It doesn't need to be local to the location it could be an Australian band you listened to in Canada and the music suited the place.

The day before the cup final I had to go into the Western for a scan, all indications were that it could be the same cancer that killed my old man. As ever I had told very few people and had bottled it up. I was given the all clear as no tumours were found.

So I left the Western on cloud 9 and got on the first bus heading towards Princes Street. Getting off on George St I walked down Castle St, the sun was shining, the view was spectacular and all was well in the world.

Then the busker ahead ahead of me started playing Caledonia, my favourite and I think most poignant Scottish song. A tear was shed and I even put money in his hat (which is the bit of the story that surprised family and friends most)

sorry for rambling

Not rambling at all and glad you are fine. I had a health scare in my twenties when they found a suspicious swelling which thankfully was found to be a harmless cyst. Being driven home from the hospital after seeing the specialist ' Weather with You ' by Crowded House came on the radio and whist not really a fan of the band when I hear it now I remember that worrying time and the relief afterwards. Caledonia on the other hand is a great song that makes us think deeply about Scotland and our own lives.

Lovely wee story, Frenchie.  Great tune too.

Mainly though, delighted to hear about your scan results.

UB40 ivory madonna always reminds me of paris 84.

Listened to them on the Mercer bus travelling there.

Was fragile as fek on the way back.

Rough ferry and wine was a bad combo.

Not sure I've got the right remit for this thread but theres my contribution.

I always listen to Boards of Canada when I'm driving around the Highlands. Similar vibe to your Mogwai, I guess.

Many years ago, probably 1953, on a guard at a site on the Suez Canal for a bridge that was constantly being damaged,  this was a small group, sleeping in pup tents so not much recreation. I was off duty and had gone up on a sand dune and was sitting looking over the canal. One of the guys had a radio playing and the singer was doing See The Pyramids Across the Nile. Certainly appropriate, but I was sitting contemplating where I would be when I was old, I often look back on that eighteen year old, he just had no idea on any of the five w's but it worked out fine.

The remit is wide. Could be memories as well as a song matching a location. You remember a song for any reason that's fine.

Auld Reekin'

Many years ago, I was visiting a mate who lived and worked in Vienna. We'd gone out in his car and had driven through the Wienerwald to the neighbouring province of Styria: wilder and more mountainous country than around Vienna, but not yet into the high Alpine scenery that you get further west. Anyway, we were driving along this beautiful valley, with forested mountain slopes on both sides and a broad, fast-flowing river running through it, when my mate put on a tape (that dates it!) of Strauss waltzes: absolutely wonderful and fitted the occasion perfectly.

I'm not the biggest classical music fan, although I've always really liked the Strauss waltzes probably due to their use in '2001 A Space Odyssey', but this was just a great time and place for them.

Who,what,where why and when.

Jake I don't know if you have had the experience of being miles away from home, just a boy, and in a big barren area, you do have an inclination to drift away from real life and just meditate. At least I did and actually still do although a wee bit past physically the boy stage, but still mentally at times right there. And sometimes a piece of music can take you right back there.

You get it. It doesn't connect the same if the music is too mainstream.
