ri Alban
Is this a one off, the nations league, or will they alter it for the world cup qualifying campaign. Sure is better than friendlies.
William H. Bonney
Trying to figure out the nations league is similar to trying to imagine if there was nothing that existed. It ****s with your head.
Debut 4
They’re basically making sure(regards the dates) that the traditional qualifying groups are still significant and not worthless. To have already qualified via the Nations League would make the euro qualifying groups pointless for some teams.
Mikey1874
Seems Holland have qualified for finals as a result of a tactical change passed to players on a note of paper. Wonder if anyone has thought of doing that.

Mikey1874
For the next Nations League 2020-21 we are in League 2 The nations along with Scotland there are Germany, Croatia, Iceland, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Austria, Wales, Finland, Serbia and Norway. Good test.

Though I suppose in theory we could benefit from the 'next best team' thing when Germany etc qualify from the actual qualification groups.. Mikey1874
In terms of the minnows it's Georgia, Belarus, Kosovo and Macedonia that will play off for a Euro place (if none of them qualify from Euro qualifying)..
Jamboelite
Only time I have cheered a Scotland result and had no idea what it actually meant in the scheme of the competition and even now the format gives me a brain freeze.

It's a mindfeck still, but for once they've made improvements! It's been a wholly unexpected success across the board. All the feedback from national squads and managers has been positive. Also I like the two one leg playoffs as it's pretty much the standard playoff route but facing two different teams instead of the same side over two legs. Scotland play Finland at hampden in the first leg and either norway or serbia in the 2nd tie. Very positive stuff to look forward to before a ball has been kicked in the qualification group. The way I see it we can completely take the shackles off and go for it as we've already got a playoff which is the secondary aim most of the time anyway above direct qualification. If we finish in the top two in our group then we can do israel a wee favour and they can take our playoff spot. Happy days.

Tbh people will moan about that and (probably correctly) think they'll get humped in the actual tournament but I like that about the Nations League tbh. Qualifying for a European Championship for millions of people in countries like that would possibly be their greatest ever sport achievement. The feel good factor from being 'there' along with the Spains, Italys, Germany etc and the memories created is priceless, especially for kids. I was like 9 when we played in France 98 and I still remember it like yesterday whether we achieved **** all or not.

Moving forward the Nations League is going to be a very positive thing for us in terms of the European Champinships as there are 24 places to fill and the vast majority of the big countries will qualify automatically. Hopefully we can compete for an automatic place too given we are going to be in Pot 3 and there are 2 spots in each group. It remains to be seen how they will utilise it for UEFA World Cup qualifying but at least the good news on that front is the increase to 16 UEFA places for the US World Cup if indeed they don’t change it in time for Qatar which is being rumoured. Thought Qatar were being given the bullet ! Never mind. The speculation is that FIFA might increase the total number of entrants to 48 in time for the Qatar World Cup rather than the agreed upon increase in time for the US/Mexico/Canada World Cup. Whenever it happens it means an increase to 16 UEFA qualifiers so clearly the sooner the better for Scotland!

In this scenario we would be Switzerland and Celtic or Rangers would be Portugal. VAR protecting the interests of the smaller team / nation can only be a good thing. The problem in Scotland would be that we would have the same technology, but the VAR referees would be as incompetent as the referee on the pitch and the zenith of incompetence, the compliance officer.
