millerjames398
Just looking for any of our fans of a certain vintage who might remember him from his time at hearts ,he was a distant relative but always called him uncle Tommy, another poster was sound enough to post a wee snippet from a hearts book on the furthest travelled thread, just thought some fans could remember what he was like as a player? AllyjamboDerbyshire
Tommy Traynor was a Hearts regular when I first started going to matches in the early 60s. I really liked him and even tried to copy his hairstyle (I was only 11). What I remember most about him was the way he always stuck his arm up in the air as he was about to cross the ball, a bit like Dennis Law did after scoring! I was quite disappointed when he left, to join Dundee Utd, I think.

jambos are go!
A very good player who could play on either wing but played mainly on the left. Tricky with an awkward but effective style to get past defenders. Latterly he had a succesful spell as a striker and his transfer to Dundee United was bewildering. Credit to himself and the club. His spikey haircut was a bit different but tame by todays standards.

millerjames398
A nice story I was told about Tommy was that when hearts came to his house in Bonnybridge to ask him to sign , John Cummings and Tommy walker I think, spoke to him and they had a sort of gentleman's agreement that he would come into tynecastle and sign, a day or so later Sean fallon and the local priest came to his house to talk to him about signing for celtic , but he wouldn't hear them out told them he'd shook hands with Mr Cummings and Mr walker and that he was signing for the hearts ,he was a celtic fan growing up so they were well pissed off he wouldn't go to them

Tommy Brown
Looking at Darin's programme posts it makes me think of Scandinavian players that played at that era. Jensen & Miller, Morton had Nielsen, Jensen & Bartram. Persson at Rangers. I'm sure there were a few more. It it seems they stopped coming over after this time. Deevers
I liked Tommy Traynor. He was fast, tricky and a good crosser. He probably suffered because we had both Johnny Hamilton and Roald Jensen on the books at the same time.

millerjames398
Before my time as a player but I was always told he was a distant relative of ours too, on my grandmothers side. All that generation are dead now but will ask my brother who has done a bit of genealogy. That's quite interesting, tommy married my grans niece she was from a wee village called Cowie just outside stirling ,he was from Bonnybridge ,but my gran moved from Cowie when she was a young child so lost touch with a lot of her family there,so I never really got to know them, and I was just told of my "uncle tommy" who played for the hearts, until early 90s when I met him when he came to visit, really nice guy, but as I posted earlier I was a bit shy so never really asked him a lot about hearts and his time with us,wish I had now as he passed away a year or so after his visit. Jensen & Miller, Morton had Nielsen, Jensen & Bartram. Persson at Rangers. I'm sure there were a few more. It it seems they stopped coming over after this time. Johansen and Sorenson (goalkeeper) played for Morton and Rangers and Hearts had Rene Moller. Another who was at Morton was John Madsen who moved to Hibs. Henning Boel played for Aberdeen and Finn Dossing a striker who scored 76 goals in 115 games for Dundee Utd. There were one or two decent Icelandic players around then too one being Edvalsson who played for Celtic.

Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk more of an out and out winger. My memory is of tommy and johnny rarely straying far from the touchline but obviously from the goals they scored they must have at times. Tommy Walker's controversial switch from the trafitional 3-2-5 to what was then considered a defensive 4-2-4 spelled the beginning of the end for having two specialist wingers in a side. JC like most of TTs successors (roald jensen and rab prentice perhaps excepted) was a wide player but much more involved in the centre - a combination winger and inside forward . Not that it matters. I remember the stick Hearts got in the press (what's new) when they changed to the "ultra defensive" 4-2-4. I've been wracking my ageing brain since this thread started to remember Tommy Traynor's nickname. I don't remember it being used by the fans but I remember Willie Wallace shouting to him at the back of the stand and I'm sure he called him Wispy. Maybe someone else can confirm. I only heard him called that once despite the fact I used to stand outside the players entrance every home game getting my programme signed. I'm sure the players must have been sick of the sight of me.
