Ach, if folk want to party because of it why not?

Always love a party and wish the entire world would party more. This is about numpties who are not Irish celebrating Ireland's day. I am a big fan of the Emerald Isle but I am not Irish nor want to be. You can dye my pint green and stick a ridiculous Guinness hat on my head and it still will not change this fact.

Sty Patricks Day. Much merriment and you'd have to be a virgin not to pull.

I've got a feeling some people's wives only let them out for Hearts games, assuming she doesn't have DIY for them to do.

Imagine thinking that logging onto kickback and typing out your hatred of St P's Day is a better way to spend time that actually going out for a good time.

Each to their own and all that, eh?

No one is asking you to be Irish.  Or sticking hats on your head I should imagine.  Can't comment on the green pint, but if a pub does that then that is their choice.

I'll stick to nights out with mates and celebrating worthwhile things than some faux nationalist day. Even my Irish mate doesn't celebrate it.

It is so tragic.

Saying that, I don't even like seeing people wear other countries football tops.  Not Brazil - nothing.

I am possibly one of the proudest Brits on the planet but I think the most tragic thing I've seen with regards to this was a Scotsman wearing an England football top  - shan patter beyond compare.

Cruyff Turn

I noticed a lot of the Currant Buns on ‘pussjotter’ were trying to claim St Paddy’s day an some sort of loyalist festival because Mr Guinness was a proddy, pro Brit who hated Nationalism and St Paddy was only a Christian & never a Catholic who was also an Ulsterman. Possibly all true, however trying to turn a pissup into some political point scoring contest seemed to be their thing this year instead of the usual **** the taigs routine.

Literally everything to an old firm is turned into a political issue.  You could have a painting competition of a tin of sweetcorn and it would be a political issue between Republican or Loyalist. Welts of the highest order.

Good for you.

I'll stick to celebrating St Paddys day(even though I'm not Irish), Christmas(even though I'm not a christian) and even hogmanay(even though I don't care about a new year) and occasionally, like birthdays etc I'll celebrate something worthwhile, like my birthday, being friday etc etc.

I personally can't imagine only having a good time as long as it follows some strict sense of identity, but each to their own.

Out of curiosity, what do you think of a Scottish person celebrating their  birthday in an Indian restaurant? They aren't even Indian ffs...

If you need a reason to go out, feel free. I'll just continue going out when I choose to go out.

As for that last statement...

It compares favourably to these scumbag flautists that march about in orange on the 12th or whenever they are allowed by their local council and police. I'll say that for it.

I can think of few sights more pathetic on the planet than an orange march. What a load of old bollocks the Republican/Loyalist bollocks is.  Truly tragic.

With regards to Paddies day tho, nah not for me.  I just see it as so false.  I have been to Ireland a good few times and would say that yes I am a fan of the place.  In general I like the people and will go back again for sure but I am not Irish.

Ludicrous comparison.

But you knew that even before you put finger to keyboard.

Of course.

But it is as ludicrous as people getting offended at others for getting pished on Paddy's day/

Not sure offence is in the air, it is just really sad seeing people celebrating another countries 'day'.  Don't see too many people celebrating 4th July or Australia day.

To me it is as sad as a Hearts fan from Edinburgh celebrating Man United winning the Champions League. It is not our day, it is a Man United fan's day.  It just seems desperate.

Yes it is.

Its not just the getting pished bit that irritates some though.

It’s the dressing up, the flags, the hats, the general (very false) camaraderie that ensues when.a few ‘pints of the black stuff’ have been consumed.

4.2% ABV by the way.

I've celebrated the 4th before and thanksgiving before, had an excellent time. Never been invited to an Aussie day celebration before but I would go.

I guess in this kind of context, celebrating another friend's birthday would seem odd. It's their birthday, why would anyone else want to have a night out?

A day full of Aussies - ooft that would take some amount of money for that.

Every second referring to Scotland as 'over here' and mentioning how bad the weather is. As if they are that stupid to actually be shocked at our temperate climate as they thought it was going to be 40 degrees all year round.

Same but different.

Halloween is another pile of commercialised shite that is used as a vehicle for very strange behaviour by people that are probably (one would hope) old enough to know better, and not be surprised when they realise that they actually have something between their ears.

What do you get up to on the 14th July?

Given you are in France, do you get involved, go to see anything?  On holiday as a kid we were in France a couple of times when Bastille Day fell.  Quite good fun iirc.

I think the problem in the UK is that there are no days like this.  We don't expropriate a Saints day as we aren't really religious (Catholic) and we are too scizophrenic to embrace a Scottish Day (I hate kilts/tartan/shortbread etc) but who would embrace a UK day?  Because going by form we all know the Uk really means England and England means the UK, well at least in the eyes of the majority of the UK population!

The home nations inability to have a notion of their own culture or identity, whilst respecting their compatriots means we are in this void - filled by St Paddy's Day it would seem!

Any notion of "Britishness" is ebbing away, it's thin facade cracked, because it was all a sham in the first place.

Hi Boris ?

We take no part in the Bastille Day celebrations, why indeed would we?

It seems to us that it is another excuse by the French for an ‘occasion’ or a ‘fete’, which they absolutely love!

Every event sees the Mayor of our town grinning haplessly for photos, war ‘veterans’ trotting out the same old uniforms, jeeps and land rovers driving round the town and large trestle tables set up on the beaches groaning under the weight of ‘celebration food’ and, quelle surprise, copious amounts of alcohol. Not really our scene, I’m afraid.

Having got all that off my chest, can I say that your post is an excellent one?

:)

I think that sounds all rather enjoyable and I'd happily celebrate the removal of an autocratic monarchy!  BUt I get your point.  Fair play to you!

Aren't all celebrations part of a world wide Illuminati control?

Imagine the table at these secret meetings.....world leaders, billionaires, alien generals......and the Easter Bunny. Terrifying.....

Presbyterians don't have saints apparently. I'm still waiting on a reply from a member on here from about 4 years ago, about the name of the Kirk in Edinburgh. :D Sadly no reply.

Well, if that’s the criteria, why do they only do it on the 17th of March?

I always thought St Patrick was Scottish not Welsh.

What does it matter?

He is a figure in Irish history/folklore hence his patron saint status. His irishness or otherwise is pretty irrelevant.

Not an argument against your point i8, just a general comment I guess.
