St Paddy's Day

I'll actually be in Ireland for this on Friday. Won't in Dublin. Expecting it resemble a West Lothian galaday.

When I say for it, I don't mean purposely for that.

Hopefully not any resemblance to the Miss West Lothian among the local females.

The Irish tend to be quite proud people. We tend to be self-loathing.

Factual post.

When's St. George's day?

I'll celebrate that too.

Sunday, 23rd April.

I suppose, if we do what the yanks do, we can look back far enough in our family trees and have all manner of piss ups....!

Is there a Viking day ?

Sorry, no interest in this plastic paddy rubbish but then I'm not Irish.

This sums it up.

If you're not Irish then just leave the Irish to it.

Don't mind St Paddy's Day but all the hat wearing etc can gtf unless you are actually Irish and even then...I do wonder why we celebrate St Patricks Day but not St Andrews Day to the same extent.

Because as a historically Presbyterian country celebrating Saints' days wasn't really the done thing.

Not in the Indy thread no, BTW do u have some word alert, cause you always seem to appear when it's mentioned.

I'd put up a smiley but Morgan's used them all like a love struck teenager every time his mate posts, even when it's as funny as chewing gum in the pubes.

...a bit disco

Already had a few looks in the office from colleagues talking about going out to celebrate this.

They are as Scottush / British as I am and when I said "why the **** do you want to celebrate that pish when you aren't even Irish ? " I got glared at.

The answer ? An excuse to get pished.....

Arseholes.

We even have a St Patrick's Day menu today with well known Dublin favorites such as Mulligatawny Soup and a Khobez Flatbread.

I shit you not.

They do have a Guinness Stew to be fair.

Welts.

You tell 'em Champ.

Got to doff your leprechauns hat to Guinness though, they've made the day their own.

that's exactly it; a huge PR exercise where guiness get ?millions of free advertising.

I hate the whole St. Patrick's day thing but, I have to admit, some of that is jealousy/anger that we do **** all in the country for our own national day

It isn't our national day. It's our saint's day.

There is a difference.

I see nothing wrong with Scotland celebrating St Andrews Day a bit more energetically, maybe even a public holiday.

Would be a good curtain raiser and 'kick-off' for the Christmas season.

I get it, or the nearest Monday anyway, as a holiday.

It isn't the best.

I totally agree, St Andrews Day should be a national holiday and we should maximise it, as the Irish do very well. It would also be a very good for tourism/overseas promo: I watch an Argentinian TV programme every day and today the first feature was about St Paddys Day and the presenter was wearing green as a tribute.

Do we need a day to get pished? Millions of Scots on Whisky is not a good idea, we'll redecorate the place. :(

Aye but it wasn't that in 1994 when he was on Fantasy Football talking about his days in the Manchester city firm and how he hoped it kicked off between England and Argentina.

Nothing to do with being a good or otherwise proddie. The whole thing is a lot of pish, like the celebrating of that  possibly otherwise fictional character on 25th December each year.

Let's get back to the proper pagan rituals our ancestors so lovingly celebrated  :2thumbsup: They're more real than this nonsense.

When I was working in Ireland a contractor had his wife over for the week end, they passed a shop on the Sunday with the entrance roller shutter raised just about a foot. "Look Brian, Sunday shopping for Leprechauns" I thought that was funny  :uhoh2:

Nothing authoritarian about it.

I'm just making the point there's a historical reason why St Andrew's day isn't celebrated in the same manner as others.

In an increasingly secular society I see no reason to change that.
