Bazzas right boot
The players should be trying in every game. If they pick and choose which games to try hard in they can gtf. Beating hibs is important, for various reasons but none more so than it gets us through to the next round in the cup, where we have ayr or Clyde at home. Motivation shouldn't be an issue. Agree the problem is too many of our players couldn't care less about Hearts - they are seeing us as a stepping stone to England, and just see this as another game
leginten
Exactly. A manager gauges his players, gets to know them. PS was probably playing it down to temper the players a bit knowing their natural aggression to the fixture takes hold anyway, trying to find the balance with focus. I remember Gary MacKays story of being given an aspirin by Sandy Jardine at training the day before his second Derby but told him it was a sleeping tablet. MacKay couldn't sleep before his first Derby and didn't play well. SJ was trying to calm him down , trick of the mind and showed MacKay that he can actually control his emotions but still give the right level of performance. Paulo Sergio was a bright guy who would have been able to learn from his players. I have no doubt he would have got the message fairly quickly from the core of the team who ended up inflicting the biggest humiliation in Hibs' history that the derby was indeed no ordinary fixture. The yawning gulf between his mediocre league performance and 100% derby stats indicates that he got the derby in a big way. Of course, he spun the press a different line. Even after the miserable derby run under Neilson, whose legacy may be continued under Cathro now that Hibs have discovered we're not really all that fussed about being top dogs in Edinburgh because we have bigger fish to fry - and by the way help yourselves to that Scottish Cup - it appears that the "just another game" craziness still has its adherents on here. I wonder if these people reckon that 17, 22 and more recently 13 in a row were established by treating the game against Hibs just like any other.
