Auld Reekin'
Now filed under things to read.

Currently continuing with my Japan / Murakami obsession and reading After the Quake by Murakami. It's pretty good.

To continue this and the gangster theme, look out for some of the films made by Takeshi "Beat" Kitano: 'Violent Cop' being one. He tends to direct and star in his films and most are excellent. He does also make fairly low-key and intense dramas, so make sure you know what you're getting if it's just ganster / crime stuff you're looking for!

One of his most recent films was 'Zatiochi', which could be described loosely as a "gangster" film, although a historical one with samurais in it. It is brilliant.

For something different again, there's a really good Italian film called "La Scorta". This is centred on the lives, personalities and relationships of a armed escort team for a Mafia-busting prosecutor in Sicily. It's very well acted, scripted, and filmed and - I thought - paints a pretty realistic and gritty picture of life in Sicily and the struggle against the Mafia there. It's subtitled, as are Takeshi's films, but don't let that put you off.

(Apologies if anyone has mentioned any of these already - I've not had time to read through the whole thread.)

Yeah I did mean Infernal Affairs well spotted!

Got all 3 the 1st one is the best, the 2nd one is decent enough and the 3rd is pretty good too. Too bad they won't ever make a sequel to The Departed (which is an American remake of it but also class) beacuse they killed all the characters off.

The last organised crime film I watched and really enjoyed was " Eastern Promises ". It involves the Russian mafia in London.

Perhaps it's beacuse of the recent Russian migration to London and the poisoning of the that former KGB officer there but it seemed more " real " to me than Italian mafia films set in the US or home grown mockney gangster flicks.

You know that the trafficking of Eastern European prostitues to London happens and that the Russian mob is obviously here in the UK.

There are some good performances and David Cronenberg directs.

Seemed like a fairly accuarate depiction of Russian mob culture transplanted to London.

Good film.

I bought some of people's recommendations. Someof them were less than ?1, all were less than ?3 (amazon marketplace is quality:)).

Long Good Friday - really liked it - strange seeing Pierce Brosnan, Dexter Fletcher and half of the cast from the Guy Ritchie films, way before they were famous. Great ending as well.

Get Carter - Brilliant also. Michael Caine is immense. He bitchslaps, punches, shoots, steals, bullies and boozes his way around 1960s Newcastle in a legendary rampage. What a guy!!

Once Upon a Time in America - Excellent as well. What an actor James Woods is, absolutely brilliant. Long film but defo worth it. De Niro on top form also as the deeply flawed, victim of circumstance.

I also got Mad Max for ?0.68 - what a bargain. Brilliant film also.

For something from a different era, you should check out some of the Jimmy Cagney gangster films. I'd highly recommend The Roaring Twenties and White Heat.

I think heat is brilliant.

Although i really like it, every time i see it, i always want Pacino to be the one that dies at the end. De Niro is so damn cool in that film and Pacino overacts horribly at times.

The "gimme what you got!!!!" shouts in particular, make me cringe every time i see the film.

I watched heat having a smoke, and found the shootout scene to be pretty intense. The sounds and the screaming were spot on. About a year later i was reading empire or some lads mag and that scene was voted best shootout scene in a film. How cool was Val Kilmer during the build up to the shootout, calmy walking up the street!

Beat me to it. Jimmy Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Edward G Robinson and George Raft. Between these four actors they made some of the best gangster films ever.

The one from the 80s that everyone if forgetting is Mona Lisa with Bob Hoskins and Michael Caine. Personally think it is Caine's best film. Slimeball crime lord to a T.

Crime Story - a 1980s Tv series set in Chicago with Dennis Farina (who went on to bigger things in various gangster movies). I absolutely loved that programme.

You can get the box sets on Amazon.

I watched a Brit gangster movie a while ago set in Southend about a young guy who starts off as a driver for a mob guy and ends up in all sorts of bother ( he gets to pump the bosses wife). Can't remember the title but pretty violent and a good story to boot. Anyone got the title ?

I was going to say Sexy Beast and City Of God, but several have beaten me to it.

Best I've seen recently is Elite Squad - like City Of God but even more kinetic, if that's possible.

I'll also stick a recommendation in for Takashi Miikes' various Yakusa-related films..

Ichii The Killer

The Guys From Paradise

Like A Dragon

John F + Kalamazoo, those films cost buttons on amazon, i'll check one of them out.

269 Miles - added to my list of films to see - thanks. :)

Armiya - the Hong Kong and Japanese films really interest me, going to give them a try also.

Watched Eastern Promises tonight for the first time and it was stunning. One of the best films i've seen since No Country for Old Men and the Departed. Viggo Mortenson is incredibly good. He's rapidly becoming one of my favourite actors after LOTR and a History of Violence. Cronenberg's direction is outstanding also. Can't believe how violent it was. Great, great film.

The scene in the baths.

That bit is brutal. What a scene though, not likely to forget that in a hurry. Very similar to the explosive graphic violence in a History of Violence.

The big guy he stabs in the eye is Errol from Snatch, one of the guys that the ****** kill.
