Which of the following former Hearts goalkeepers was the best in your opinion?

Jim Cruikshank, Henry Smith, Gilles Rousset, Antti Niemi, Craig Gordon.......

Has anybody ever ranked Hearts goalkeepers statistically?

Henry was a great goalkeeper for a long number of years but perhaps we relied on him for too long past his best?

No Nicky Walker?

:P

His first touch of the ball in a competitive game for Hearts was picking the ball out of the back of the net, he came on as a half time sub for Henry who'd got an injury and within 30 seconds of the restart the opposition (Rangers?) scored. :(

Probably depends on which generation you are. My Dad would say Cruikshank hands down. For me Gordon will become the best and will be known throughout European football.

Craig Gordon - technique

Henry Smith - fondness

Cruikshank - just because

Niemi - one off saves

For me, its Gordon over the rest.

Niemi for me

Anyone that says Smith is a:hobofish:

Niemi is easily the best GK I have seen in my lifetime as a Hearts fan.

Smith was also a very decent GK who unfortunatly made some very high profile mistakes in Glasgow.

Smith probably prodused one of the best saves I have ever seen (Tommy Coyne header)

definitely Niemi, tho all on the list were very capable keepers.

Jim Cruickshank is clearly the best goalkeeper Hearts have had since the war.

Not only capable of stopping the opposition he also encouraged the side from his goal line. Commanding goalie who kept us going during the horror years of the 60's when the 'youth policy' arrived.

His triple save at the penalty will stay long in the mind!

Sorry to post again on this, but i have been fortunate to have seen all the goalies mentioned and as i have said Cruickie was the best for me my boyhood hero along with Willie Wallace however Niemi is the closest that has come to matching Cruickie, Craig Gordon has still a bit to go IMHO but i have no doubt he will become one of the best that Scotland has produced.

Feel strongly about this subject and hope beyond hope that Cruikie will return to

his home (tynie) that will be an emotional day for many Jambos (If it ever happens)

I never seen Cruikshank, obviously Andy IS as old as he looks!

Niemi performed the best in a Hearts jersey.

Gordon will go on to be better than him but for another club.

Smith was an excellent 'keeper on his day but equally awful from time to time.

Rousset was very similar to Smith.

yup. Gordon is by far the best, some of his saves including his one against Rangers from Buffel were world-class imo. Niemi was good too, but i don't think even he could make some of the saves that Gordon made in his time here.

'Old timers' who have seen them all since the W War II would rate Jimmy Brown as the best.

I used to think Jim C, he was my first 'hero', I'd probably rate AN and CG as better keepers now.

I've got a query showing who conceded the fewest per game. I'll dig it out.

My least favourite was Ray Dunlop. :(

In my lifetime, the best all-round goalkeeper I've seen has been Antti Niemi; he was my hero when I was younger. He truly is the only world class player I've seen at Tynecastle.

Some of the saves he pulled off were unbelievable and I would love to know the amount of points he won us over the course of his time with us.

Unfortunately I never met him - as a 12 year old that would've made my year. By all accounts he was a gentleman and he clearly loved the Hearts. Would like to think he'd come back in some capacity when he hangs up his boots.

Niemi for me - he was just different class altogethre. In time, I'd expect Craig Gordon to become better so at his peak he will probably be better than Niemi at his peak. The difference is Niemi was a Hearts goalkeeper at th epeak of his playing days. Sentiment wants me to pick Cruickie, but if I was picking the team and had the choice it's easy, Niemi is the man.

You need to get this into context. Cruckie was the best "Hearts man " between the posts, a great player who, as has been mentioned, alongwith Donald Ford kept us going in the real bad years.I personaly think that Cruckie kept us up for at least 2 seasons. Technically though Niema was, and is, the most gifted. You hve to take your hat of to his loyalty in the way he left us as well. Goron? Not yet the finished article for me though no doubt he will be the greated Scottsh keeper one day. As an aside, as has been mentioned this team should move heaven anearth to get Cruckie back to Tynie. Walter as with Guilles, reat entertainment!!

Great list and very well done.

Mind you there is one flaw, it does not take into account the defence in front of the goalie and the standard of the opposition they faced.

Craig Gordon done well when Pressley controlled the defence in front of him and with a Sunderland defence made of paper and a top opposition he does not look so good. If you get my drift.

That does not take away from the list.

The point is Cruickshank controlled his defence and I have seen him change the game by saving a penalty or just his reliability at the back. His personality dominated at times of stress in a way others failed to do.

Still, good to contemplate the standard of goalkeeper, which I think is very high, especially in comparison to the wee team. Only Goram, Younger and Leighton come close. :)

...

Also the game has become in general more defensive. The teams of the 40s and 50s were more concerned with scoring goals rather than stopping them. Hence the higher ratios of Willie Duff and Gordon Marshall.
