Underrated footballers

After reading the overrated footballers thread, I got to thinking about underrated players

Not sure what others thought of Jim Hamilton but I thought he was a very good player. Not the fastest striker in the world, and looked clumsy at times, but had great technical ability, knew how to find the back of the net And was quite handy in the air.

Mind when he signed, he and Robbo formed a good partnership towards the end of the 96/97 season, with both of them scoring regularly. He then scored some important goals in his next season and was part of that famous 98 team.

Scored a very impressive goal against Dundee United at Tannadice in a 1-0 win in the title run in; flicking it over a defender and hitting a half volley past the Dutch porn star.

After that we sold him to Aberdeen and from there he just couldn't settle at any team for the rest of his career. A player who most will remember as a journeyman, but I wished we'd kept him a little longer As I think he was better than that.

He also scored that wonder goal for Motgerwell which was voted goal of the decade. Jim Hamilton Goal Motherwell Vs Celtic:

Anyway, over to you KB.

Neil McCann. On his day he was one if the best in Scotland.Against a very strong rangers team with players like laudraup and Gascogne he was the one who stood out consistently .Running at players he reminded me of colqhoun and I'm very surprised he never got a chance down south. My opinion mind.

McCann played a few seasons at Southampton.

Going with s Hearts connection, I'd say Palazuelos, or even Mrowiec in his 2nd spell at least. Not the most glamorous players but barely put a foot wrong on the park.

I used to say Daniel Sturridge was massively underrated but seems to be getting the credit he finally deserves.

I'd say Cazorla and Carrick right now are fairly underrated. Possibly even James Milner.

I was a big fan of Jim Hamilton, was one of my favourite players at the time. He scored against the vermin at Easter Road not long after he signed for us too I think.

He comes into my work quite often, he always seemed taller on the telly and his missus is pretty tidy!

Lol, James Milner, he is massively over rated if anything.

On a thread about "underrated" players has somebody really picked a guy that played regularly for Barcelona?!?!

Hearts players?

Robinson, D. Ferguson, Fl?gel, Berra, Wallace, Jankauskas and Millar. Off the top of my head. :)

Wes Brown, in the respect that he is underrated by many fans. Seen as a joke figure by many. I saw him live at Sunderland and he was immense, was winning everything.

Ketutis Ivaskevicius.

Not a world beater by any stretch, but a decent player who got slaughtered.

I don't think it matters who they have played for, you can still be under rated by many. Poor comment to make imo.

Exactly who was Mark van Bommel underrated by? He's got bings of caps and played for some great clubs, captaining most of them. Off the top of my head wasn't he captain for Milan, PSV and Barcelona?

I've never heard not read any "that boy van Bommel is rubbish" comments. Just where did you see/hear he was underrated?

I certainly never heard him being talked up either, got plenty of stick from pundits at the 2010 world cup aswell.

Who was Wallace under rated by? What has he done to merit being talked up more than he has.

First paragraph shows you actually don't know what underrated means. He's not the type of player to get headlines, largely that's the strikers, but to suggest he was getting "plenty of stick" is baseless. Unless you are talking about a specific tackle/action, you certainly don't mean pundits were saying he was rubbish. Let's remember in the year you attest he was being underrated he was captain of the bundesliga champions and in a Champions League final.

Second paragraph, the answer is Hearts fans. Had you been on this forum or at games when he was playing for us that was fairly evident. Not sure how far back threads go, we've moved server a couple of times and lost stuff. He was popular at the start, massively underrated/suggested for being dropped in the middle and rated as we sold him. Funnily just like McHattie right now...

Claude makal?l?. Gave lampard and co the license to go play.

Underrated?? The guy had a position named after him...

Plenty people would say who? If you mentioned van Bommel, he was under rated by a lot of people. Case closed.

There's plenty other suggestions you can have a dig at in this thread, funny you picked out my post yet again.

Shovelly Joe

Stevie Fulton didn't get the credit his play deserved. Mainstay in the 98 cup winning team. Left peg to die for with an eye for goal. Would get his game in the current Hearts side at his best.

Agreed.  Punching well above his weight at Man City.

I don't think he was underrated. Many times I've heard his position being referred to as the Makalele role since he retired.

Correct, even though there were plenty before him who did the same thing.

Chelsea's team in 2004. Most people when asked would name players like Lampard, Cech, Drogba, Robben then Makalele. Yes he has a position named after him but I think his position in that team is certainly underrated.

It will always be The Neil Berry role for me.

Along the lines of Martin Petras, I though Tomas Kancelskis looked OK the few times he played for us. Not brilliant, but he could have done a job. A bit like Ivaskevicius, unfortunately joined the club when fans were happy to write off players from Eastern Europe without even having seen them play.

I think you can be under-rated and still play at the top level mind. I don't think it applies to Marc van Bommel though, I always thought he was a great player.

I think Edin Dzeko is under-rated by Man City. I'd play him with Aguero in behind every game.

Another was Damiano Tommasi. Didn't get the credit he deserved for Roma or Italy.

Going back to the early sixties - Willie Polland springs to mind.   Jim Brown in the seventies (before his leg break), Neil Berry in the eighties, Johnny Millar in the nineties, and Robbie Neilson more recently.

Barasa.

Thought he looked a decent player. Similarly Kancelskis that we had.

I'd also say Boyack. Thought he did really well for Levein.

Funnily enough given the OP I think him and Jim Hamilton would have been a great front 2 pairing.

Wouldn't say he was underrated but certainly towards the end of his career he took a bit of stick publicly. The Dutch people felt he only played at the 2010 world cup as he was the manager's son in law.

That Jim Hamilton goal reminds of this peach from Scott Crabbe back in the days when Rangers were good.

Great game, wasn't the norm for him though. He was at the end of his career then as well.

Not Sandy Clark as many would have thought.

Great call. Going further back George Fleming, Raold Jensen and Tosh McKinley. Also Alex MacDonald who was much more than the niggly little pest I thought before he arrived. Last but not least Willie Gibson .
