Top 10 Cult Heroes!

The People's Chimp

While we're on Legends, what better time to open up the Cult Hero debate.

Who are your top 10?

Mine, in no particular order:

Pasquale Bruno

Miko

Julien Brellier

De Vries

Quitongo

Fyssas

Rousset

Wayne Foster

Stamp

Gowser

I'd love to put in Busby and Jensen (one of my dad's all time favourites), but I never saw them play. Skacel isn't here as he is a genuine legend IMO, 2 cup wins and total destruction of the vermin. Sir Paul Hartley is the same, was just superb, pure class for us, and his contributions elevate him to legend status. The same goes for Mickey Cameron. Adam? He's in the middle ground between legend and cult hero, but maybe he should feature here? Was a big fan of Chesney but there's only room for one cheeky lithuanian winger.

It's interesting as well that much of what makes a player a cult hero is either the shorter time spent at the club, or the fact they are foreign, yet take to the club instantly. Another factor might be a slightly flaw, either of character, or as a player. Either that or a total hatred of the vermin.

Manager. Paulo Sergio. The Iberian dreamboat.

Bruno. What needs to be said? The epitome of a Cult Hero. Enigmatic, Italian, Stylish, and hard as nails. Class on and off the pitch.

Miko. His cute little face, the hatred he faced from fans across the country and the rakers he scored, especially against the vermin.

Le Juge. Again, the classic 'cult player.' Hard tackling and split opinion, but had a certain je ne sais quoi which a home grown equivalent might have lacked.

De Vries. Hibs.

Quitongo. Made up a story that his uncle was eaten by a lion. Had to leave a pitch mid game to relieve himself. What a character.

Fyssas. More European panache. Sheer class. Was a top, top player.

Rousset. Just short of legend status IMO. Cup winner, loves the hearts. Was a big player for us and a total gent.

Wayne "21" Foster. Iconic image, iconic goal. Great song.

Stamp. That goal at ER puts him in there. Could have achieved more in the game but for a love of pies and drink. Hates the hibs.

Gowser. Came to hearts as a kid from Oz, and grew to love the club, hate the hibs and top it off by scoring against them in a cup final.

You could make a case for so many others and my ten would probably change if I chose them tomorrow. Over to you kickback.

The point is to choose. Of course there are more than ten cult heroes.

5. David Obua - 'That' Celebration, plus dancing on sky sports. Also how every summer the whole of kickback started gushing over him, only to turn on him by mid-September.

4. Kevin Kyle - Smacking Murry in the mouth, escorting ratboy off the pitch when he was carded, the failure of a celebration vs Falkirk, and his tour of riccerton on sky sports.

3. Ryan McGowan - The goals vs them, celebrating every goal as if he had scored them, tying up temps on transfer deadline day, and chasing beattie around hampden.

2. Christos Karapidis - A superb central midfielder, despite what we all though about Csaba playing him there. The ball for glens goal vs Hibs, and his lack of celebration when he scored vs rangers as we were still 1 down, only hurrying us back to get us going again.

1. Robbie Neilson - That tackle, that goal in Basel, meeting an attacker on the halfway line and then running backwards for 40 yards and still allowing the cross in, the long throws, the fact that he got one haircut every two years, and shaved it to the bone, constantly being linked with rangers and transfer window time, the scotland call up, and the hunners and hunners of balls of the line.

Tough to define, cos there was the likes of JC, who was a hero first and foremost cos he was brilliant. But the socks down, the shirt untucked at the back, the kickings he took and how he just bounced up. He was cool. Then Crabbo, who was a very good player but we all loved him cos of how much of a character and a Jambo he was too.

I've gone for players who maybe weren't top, top class, but had something I personally loved (may seem a bit unfair on big Donkey and Henry, who were great for us, as well as Pointon, but they had something I liked almost above their abilities.

So many players who've given us these great moments. Beattie at Hampden, Obua at ER with the late winner and epic celebration finished off with don't drink and drive...can't believe I missed Henry Smith and his wonderful theme tune.

Couldn't take a throw in either.

I remember him being asked by the referee one time to hurry up and take a throw in but he kind of shrugged and went :uhoh2::helpsmilie:

Adam not a legend

Bunter's top ten hearts legends:

http://www.hmfckickb...n/#entry3811552

No sign of Adam.

Could perhaps have phrased it slightly better, but then the legend list can't be infinite.

BTW only you could be contrive to be a tosser in a light-hearted look at cult figures.

Do you have to be a top ten legend to be a legend like? :cornette:

Anyone who scores the winner in a cup final after a 36 year wait for a trophy immediately gains legendary status in my eyes.

Hugh Burns :)

Story about Burns or perhaps I should say urban myth - he was dropped for a Celtic game at Tynie for being slightly over hyped at the prospect of being able to injure their players based entirely on their religion - JC and a few others took exception to the comments given they were of the same religion......true or not true who knows but it was shuggy so entirely believable !

Cesny: That goal v Patrick and his first season impact.

Gronlund: Like a bulldog.

Kyle: Fantastic impact on the club.

Suso: Maybe too important an impact to be cult, but his style was irresistible.

Quitongo: Like these kind of players, all heart.

Valois: Incredible start to his Hearts career before fading.

Austin McCann: THAT goal.

Bouzid: That goal.

Elliot: Promised so much.

Stampy: Loved this guy.

Busby defintely. Kyle woudl have become one. I'll stick my neck out and say Allfie Conn Senior might be regarded as a cult hero. I think he scored a hatrick in his first game and got the insant title of King of Hearts. As part of the terrible trio he's a legend but in his own right people tend to mention Willie Bauld and Jimmie Wardhaugh more as legends. I'd love to hear the opinions of the older fans on that

Bobby Prentice - most exciting player at time though often a sub. Scored two goals in my first game at Tynie.

Dave McCreery - never a favourite it seemed but impressed with his tacking. Every tackle looked like a foul but somehow our referees could tell the difference. A great player for me.

Dave Bowman - as a 16 year old; straight into first team played with no fear. I can still him possibly in a game against Rangers, short hair, confident on the ball. Maybe some of the youngsters U20 etc could match this.

Drew Busby - the famous song. As a youngster I'm like "if the fans are singing that about him...."

Rudi Skacel - okay what has not already been said. Goal a game start, getting booked every game for leaving the field to celebrate, pointing to the left foot, responding with dignity and bite to that racist badword badword Riordon, for being a great influence on the team (though even Clum's lack of positional sense defeated even him) and an all round good guy.

Marius Zakiukas - (I'm not entering into any correspondance) That moment we saw he was a decent player when moved into defence after some shakiness in midfield. "So here it is Zakiukas everybody's having fun; here's to Valicka its only just begun" ( to Slade's Merry Christmas Everyone, Tannadice Dec 2006). And for his emotions at Hampden, tears lifting the Cup etc etc.

Eamon Bannon - a sad loss in 1978. But what a return. Part of the best Hearts side I've seen as a regular. Bald head. Great skill and composure helping a very attacking

team with likes of Colquhoun

Neil Berry - not the best player but somehow felt he gave everthing. The one player who kept his end up at Dens Park and scored that winner in next game at Tynie vs Celtic (up to 33,000 in ground)

Maurice Johnston - best Scottish player in my time. A bit strange somehow. Past his best? Part of a team that struggled. But still a skillful player who could have given more. Still remember performance at Easter Road. Not Chris Robinson / Tommy McLean's finest moment. That all I'm saying.

Walter Kidd - genuinely skillful, strong going forward. Zico. Gave his all. Good leader. Would have deserved that Double in 86. Gave a lot of pleasure to the fans.

As a kid it was Roald Jensen

Then Aird, prentice jimmy cant johny Stevenson

Then in the 80's most of the team Fozzie. Berry ect

I do Think Thorn,Beattie and Weir have attracted deserved cult status with minimal game time..

Not forgetting that minute goal against septic at Tynecastle in '98 to make it 1 - 1. I remember Tynecastle going absolutely mental.

Now there's a great shout - remember being up at Aberdeen and 3 Geordies were sat behind us - they'd had more than a few - they sang "Davie Mac Davie Mac" the entire 90 minutes - only stopping to cheer everytime he got the ball !!

One of my all time favourite Hearts goals. You can't help but love Quitongo. I love the cop falling over as the players celebrate. Other than JC's equaliser v Aberdeen in 1986 I can't remember the stadium going dafter. Unforgettable.
