That's a good move for Weir, good luck to him. Don't think Locke's going to get a number two at this stage.

DAVID WEIR is set to be unveiled as Sheffield United?s new boss in the next 48 hours.

Record Sport understands the Rangers legend will be handed his first manager?s job at the Blades ? after beating former Chelsea boss Avram Grant to the hotseat.

Weir is expected to sign- off at Everton where he has been working as reserve team coach for the last 12 months and take charge next week.

The 43-year-old had been listed as an outsider for the Goodison Park gig before the appointment of Roberto Martinez last week.

He had also been linked with jobs at Falkirk, Dundee United and in the last couple of days his name was mentioned as a possible successor to Steve Lomas at St Johnstone.

But it?s the Blades who have offered the former Scotland cap his big chance in management ? after Motherwell?s Stuart McCall turned down the job a fortnight ago.

The Yorkshire outfit were confident of landing McCall but as soon as it became apparent the former Rangers midfielder was staying put at Fir Park, they turned their attentions to Weir.

They also interviewed Australian coach Graham Arnold, ex-Blackburn boss Michael Appleton and Keith Curle before former Chelsea, West Ham and Portmouth manager Grant emerged as a shock candidate.

But it was former Ibrox skipper Weir who impressed the most after catching the eye with his work at Everton ? and he is the man United are convinced can finally get them out of the third tier of English football.

He will be backed by one of the richest budgets in the division.

Sheffield United have the biggest support in the league with an average of nearly 20,000 regularly packing out Bramall Lane.

They had more than 30,000 backing them the last time they were in the Premiership in 2007.

Fermit the Krog

Hope not

This.

The last thing Gary Locke needs is inexperience beside him in the dugout.

In saying that, hopefully new ownership one way or the other will ensure a complete clear out of the management 'team'.

Billy Brown?

Yeah. If it's neither of the above or Darren Murray it's out of the blue.

The Gasman
I think weir will be s good manager. Always a player eho had his head screwed on. Iirc wasn't he in states doing a college scholarship before going to Falkirk. As plate was intelligent in his play. He has made the move gradually I think learning for other coaches etc.

Hope works out for him and proves to be a good choice.

Agreed, but that's a big job for him to take on in his first managerial role.

Captain Canada

BB seems the obvious choice for assistant manager now but I'd like to see someone else with a wider range of experience in different countries who can bring some fresh ideas.
