Quarantine and the transport of animals

This is probably the weirdest thread I've ever started, but from my experience I know there's always someone who can help you on KB.

Right, I'm away to Poland for a month in the summer and the burd (who I'm going to visit) says you can buy tortoises over there relatively cheaply. Ever since I was a laddie I've always wanted a pet tortoise(s), so I'm really thinking of getting one or two over there and bringing them back with me.

Obviously they would have to go into quarantine etc but that's as far as my knowledge goes on the subject. Any idea how long they would be in quarantine for? How much it would cost and whether or not they'd even be allowed into the country?

Thanks in advance :D

i think u may have trouble with tortoises mate, as apparently they're really bad for air-borne diseases and stuff, or so i've heard.

(i may actually be thinking about terrapins)

Not necessarily. There are regulations that allow people to transfer pets between EU member states. The regulations cover more than just cats and dogs, but I'm fecked if I can find out any more than that. I suggest you try this:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Directories/DG_10011001

It gives a phone number and email address you can try with a query. Don't bother with the DEFRA website link, it's only useful if you're transferring cats or dogs.

Also, you could try the message board below, which is even bigger than JKB!

Brian Whittaker's Tache

I'm sure there's a serious bit of legislation regarding bringing in tortoises and the like (thats why the prices are so high)

You used to be able to buy a tortoise for 30 bob when I was a kid but with the new regs the prices have gone sky high
