jamboinglasgow
Manchester City today unveiled their plans for a training ground and youth academy on an 80 acre site next to their stadium. It will include 17 pitches of various sizes (including a full size indoor pitch) a 7,000 seater arena for reserve and youth matches as well as residential facilities for 40 youth players (where they will also be schooled) as well as if needed residential faculties for senior players. Here is a quick article about it http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-14973123 and a bbc photo gallery of the plans. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-14973122 and here is a image of what it should look like. It all looks pretty impressive (if it gets built.) The middle eastern businessman do love a grand building project, if only we could attract a Qatari or Abu Dhabi billionaire to invest as much as possible making Tynecastle into a very impressive, state of the art (and still) atmospheric stadium, and as much turning Riccarton into a world class training facility (though it does still do a good job for us.) jambos are go!
Has anyone told mother nature that she will have to vastly increase the provision of talented footballers being born to supply all these new super duper academies.

Gigolo-Aunt
There is no doubt that City have spent a fortune on the first team but with the above, I hope the owners get a bit more praise than what they currently get. Watched a program on SKY last year which was all about the City youth set up, it was very noticeable the time and effort that was being put in to it. Its going to be difficult for young players to make the break through but good to see that a chance will be given through excellent facilities. The Merse
Must be ******* great being a Man City fan. That day where they got bought over on the morning on transfer deadline day must have been ******* unreal. One day seemingly in a bit of bother under Thaksin Shinawatra, the next bought over by billionaires and signing Robinho and being linked with every player under the sun

To be fair to Man City they actually had a good youth system before their current owners took over but the good thing is that the owners have backed this and are giving everything it needs to flourish. Manchester United have shown again this season that you can build a cracking team with youth and the right signings.

since.1902
The investors have already said they won't be spending big money In the future, and have big plans for their youth set up( which is shown above) They spent the money they have to get them a team to challenge right now and will now supplement it with youth and one or two new signings
Eckauskas
Perhaps the Arab chaps have woken up to the real possibility that they won't be able to keep spending the way they're spending.
Buffalo Bill
A welcome move as it would've became ridiculous if City had gone all the way to offer C. Ronaldo, L. Messi, R. Stevenson et al ?1M per week wages. City are now at the top table but I hope it levels out a wee bit.
Erik
A training ground 'stadium' which out does 80% of what we have in the SPL. Envious much.
the general
Superb stuff and it looks like it will happen as the local council are backing it almost 100pc will regenerate a whole deprived area who knows Mary Ds might turn into a wine bar :-)

Do The Dance
UEFA fair play rules (hopefully) mean that teams won't be able to spend as much as some are. City/Chelsea being the main offenders. So this appears a smart move by City.
The Treasurer
Superb stuff and it looks like it will happen as the local council are backing it almost 100pc will regenerate a whole deprived area who knows Mary Ds might turn into a wine bar :-) This is a key factor, as well as the squillions of dollars the owners are investing in their current "toy" No matter what they build or how much they spend it will never come close to producing the dazzling number of international stars that for years have graduated from the real Academy of Football at West Ham of course
fabienleclerq
The main thng for me is the boarding school part,it doesnt seem popular here but the big clubs on the continent have it. The club control diet, education and the players train longer which given city's good youth set up could lead to some great players coming through. On that did celtic not try to set up a boarding school a while back? Think when strachen was there, did anything come of it?
Jamdub
I love it, still Mancini is in the press moaning about the lack of depth in the squad, feckin roaster. The fact that they have wasted countless millions on average players is partly his own fault and the whole set up. I think spending nearly ?300M in 3 years is mind blowing and he wants more..... Mancini will be horsed out of the door before the season ends, unless he can win something and IMO he won't with the current squad.
Say What Again
UEFA fair play rules (hopefully) mean that teams won't be able to spend as much as some are. City/Chelsea being the main offenders. So this appears a smart move by City. Saw this new academy feature on Talk of the Terrace on EPSN last night. They interviewed Brian Marwood and he said pretty much exactly the above. They're under no illusions. FIFAs financial fair play regulations means they couldn't continue to spend like they do, and in any case, that simply wasn't sustainable anyway. To be fair to Man City they actually had a good youth system before their current owners took over The same programme on ESPN last night said as much. Citys current youth set up has produced 30 players who have played in the Premiership (Joey Barton and Stephen Ireland being the two featured). It looks an absolutely stunning set up. Great for the club, and just think what's going to do in terms of jobs for the local community. Years of work to build the thing, then just how many staff will a complex that site require? Can't see anything but positives in this, though I'm sure the JKB Red Devils will
rossthejambo
That looks different class, specially the accomodation and schooling system that they're going to implement. Will make it a lot more attractive to youngsters from abroad looking to come to England. City building a solid infrastructure and to have it all in the same area is pretty decent as well, plenty other clubs would have looked elsewhere for a new training facility, all credit to them for keeping it all local. Celtic youth players are all moved to digs near the training academy and are enrolled in the local school. They train in the morning before school and are picked up again after school for more training and I think they do their homework etc at the academy. ROMANOV FAN CLUB
The new training complex is being built for 2 reasons one to bring through future stars and the other to offset previous spending to comply with UEFA's fair play rules on investment (in any money spent on players can be offset against investment in material projects like the youth academeny). UEFA have already raised their eyebrows at the sponsorship deal as it is flauting the rules they set in place i.e. they want to see the investors being held accountable for their spending, with sponsorship deals even if the wealthy owner was to sell he would be still held accountable for money's promised, Instead of lumping it on the debt of the club for future owners. But then what else do you do when you earn ?200million a week
