Craigieboy
How can people say/feel this? I saw threads on here in the last 24 hours entitled along the lines of 'Reasons why I still love Hearts'. Like it needs reaffirming? How is it possible for a person to feel embarrassed to be a Hearts supporter? Am I missing something? I'm really, really not trying to come across as an uber-fan here. I actually hate that kind of patter. But I genuinelly don't understand the concept. Being a Hearts supporter is what we are. It's our friends. Our family. Even our lifestyle, to some extent. So is it just Johnny-come-latelys that feel this way after seeing their team beaten by ?150m worth of talent? Have you ever felt embarrassed to be a Hearts supporter. And if so, why? Independence
Always embarrassed by the Hearts 'union brigade' singing loyalists songs and promoting their own bigotry. I have seen some of them tearing Saltires down in Basle and Feyenord. They are very small group, very loud and need to be moved to Ibrox, where they belong. But like the majority of fans at the games mentioned it was bang out of order!
Boof
Have you ever felt embarrassed to be a Hearts supporter. And if so, why? Yes, just the once - and I'm not sure if embarrassed is the correct word. Angry. Ashamed. Disgusted that people with whom I thought I shared a common bond could be so knob-headedly arseholey. Oh...the incident? Mark Walters coming to take a corner in front of the Shed.
amadjambo
Lol. Have seen us get humped 5-2 at home to Dumbarton so last night was nothing in comparison. Never anything but proud to be a Hearts fan, although the Lennon incident last season was clearly not our finest moment. I would agree about the "we're from the capital" song, truly terrible. The Doctor
Sorry, I'm far too young for the shed or was it a joke? Rangers signed the first black player in Scottish football in decades, Mark Walters. His first game was at Tynecastle. He took a corner in front of Hearts fans at the old shed. Several bananas were thrown at him. It was shameful and wrong. However, when Archie McPherson came on telly on the Saturday night holding a banana and looking straight into the camera and said "This... is a disgrace" And the entire nation replied "Naw Erchie, it's a banana", it was one of the funniest moments of my life. The Doctor
Oh, not our finest moment then. No, and we can distance ourselves from this kind of shit as individuals, but the perception outside of the Hearts family is that there remains a significant racist and bigoted element within Hearts. Even over the past couple of seasons I've heard monkey noises coming from somewhere behind me on occasion, even when we've fielded black players. This stuff sticks and it takes a hell of a long time and very good PR to get rid of it. We're a long way from achieving that imo.

That's funny because from what I remember Zico had him in his back pocket for most of the game and wound him up so much that he took a kick at him, got booked and Souness hooked him before he was sent off. amadjambo
1 point about the Mark Walters incident that irritates me is that his debut was the previous week at CELTIC and he had bananas thrown at him there. However, when it happened at Hearts the media labelled it a disgrace, and to this day we are remembered as the ones who did this. Not excusing the actions of the Hearts fans, but never understood how Celtic got away without the same level of contempt. BTW, Walters was a great player with skill that was extremely rare in Scotland at the time.
