James Bond movies

3. From Russia with Love - Connery's best movie imo. Two superb villains and a great storyline. Epic fight aboard the train.

2. Licence to Kill - really liked Dalton as 007. Just wish he had done more. Two stunning bursd aswell.

1. Casino Royale - totally reinvented the style of Bond. Craig is superb and shows that Bond can be hurt both physically and emotionally. Eva Green stunning.

Worst. Never Say Never Again - why oh why did Connery do this?

I love all the Moore ones too. But I can never remember what film is what.

The most disappointing Bond for me was the last one. Mainly because it was following up such a brilliant effort in 'Casino Royale'.

Speaking of Bond, I presume there's one on today?

The Doctor

Oooh, good question.

I agree with El Prof

From Russia With Love and Casino Royale, both very different, but Casino Royale discovered a vulnerability and at the same time a steely hardness to Bond (who is essentially a paradoxical character). For the third of my top three and for similar reasons I'm going to go left field and say On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Lazenby would have been a far better heir to Connery than Moore ever was and Diana Rigg, the most beautiful Bond girl of them all.

I don't think Never Say Never Again should be allowed to count, it's non EON, it wasn't produced by Broccoli, it's rogue, you might as well allow the 1966 Casino Royale.

So my three worst Bond films; I detest Live and Let Die, but that's just a personal and irrational hatred, it's not a bad film. Octopussy is terrible though and A View to a Kill if only for the stomach turning Grace Jones, who frightens and disgusts me in equal measure. My third worst Bond film is Die Another Day, which I thought was awful (with the exception of Rosamund Pike), seriously, any film that puts Madonna in it as an actual actress, NO NO NO!

Actually thinking about it, Lazenby was pretty bad, but OHMSS is a great story and Tracy

I really liked Goldeneye... but maybe Goldfinger...

From Russia With Love

Live & Let Die

Goldeneye

Worst would be Die Another Day, IMO.

One downside to the superb Casino Royale is it really makes some of the older Bonds feel very clunky, perhaps they always were tho as Eon have long had a policy of going with the times (hence the blaxploitation feel to Live & Let Die and the postponing For Your Eyes Only to cash in on the space/star wars mania with Moonraker).

Picking 3 is hard.

1) On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Lazenby is ok really and, crucially, dubbed by another actor when impersonating the Genealogist. The plot is great, it feels like the Fleming novels, and it has a stunning ending. Blofeld has never been better realised than by Savalas who puts some depth into the character. It also has the best written Bond girl until Casino Royale.

2) From Russia With Love. Superb locations, perfect plot - Bond even does some detective work here, has a great tone lifted from the novels and Connery is on top form, perfecting his playing of the role as he nails the character to the point that a previously unconvinced Fleming (who saw Noel Coward of all people in the role) is moved to write Bond's parentage into the novels to give him Scottish blood.

3) Casino Royale. I've enjoyed all the Bond actors, but the ridiculous maligned before a frame was shot Daniel Craig is really only the second actor to convey the physicality of 007 since Connery. He looks like he could rip your arms off without a second thought. The film is brilliantly shot with it's Black & White opening, has a decent baddie and the best Bond girl in years in Vesper. If it wasn't for the ending feeling a bit tacked on this could well be no 1 in my list.

Incidentally, my top 6 would actually includes a film from each actor (and this wasn't a conscious decision) with Goldeneye, The Living Daylights & For Your Eyes Only making the list).

Worst. Well I could have went for The World Is Not Enough which is overcooked and ruined by a shite plot and Sophie Marceau's terrible acting, or View To A Kill in which Moore and the series really show their age but that's saved by Christopher Walken.

But I have a real problem with Diamonds Are Forever. Connery had already quit the series only to be tempted back, and he literally dials his performance in, looking utterly disinterested in proceedings. And you can't blame him; we have the sinister Ernst Stavro Blofeld reduced to an effete, cat-stroking buffoon, a pair of ridiculously camp henchmen and a stupid plot and a crap finale. It's just painful to watch Connery in this.

Casino royale

You only live twice

Goldeneye

Worst for me is A view to a kill, I just find it a very dull film for some reason (I do like Roger Moore as Bond but that one just didn't work.)

The Best 3 from 3 to 1.

3 - Shunderball (aka Thunderball)

Sure this is the one with the machine to test how many Gs pilots can take. Anyway, it's classic Sean Connery stuff.

2 - Live and Let Die

Roger plays a card trick to bed Solitaire. Lots of Voodoo Hoodoo, Jaws, 70s jazz, speed boats and JW Peppa turns up for the first time.

1 - The Man with the Golden Gun

Roger Moore (the best Bond), Britt Ekland playing second fiddle to Maud Adams (which was ridiculous but required to set up Britt getting a load of Roger's Junk at the end), Sherrif JW Peppa of the state Louisiana pole-ees, a flying car, a bad guy with three nipples, a car jumping the river with a 360 spin, a Karate school, a Chinese Burd in a swimming pool put there purely to use the joke that her name was "chew-me" and a midget.

That is the best one.

The Worst

Either of the films with Timothy Dalton. Not bad films in themselves but in one of them Timothy doesn't get his oats one night and then makes the young lady an omelette for her breakfast anyway. Unacceptable. In reality fair enough but this is James Bond FFS.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - George Lazenby nearly burst the whole series. Put the now widely accepted practice of wearing of kilt back a couple of decades too.

Is Die Another Day the one with the invisible motor? That's the worst ever and MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE is atrocious in it anaw - not as bad as Halle Berry though. :cornette:

The best one is the Spy Who Loved Me, with Jaws and that. Quality. Did like the Timothy Dalton ones as well though, Goldeneye and Casino Royale were alright too.

Die Another Day : Invisible car, Bond surfing at the end but the moment that seals this is the moment where Bond stops his own heart so he can escape from the cell/hospital bed.

The surfing bit is about the worst CGI committed to celluloid (the bit with the canopy/paragliding is dire too. None of it comes close to Madonna's "acting" tho.

Fortunately, it convinced the producers that cgi and an ever-increasing reliance on ridiculous gadgets was not what Bond was about and got us the class reboot.

If I'm not allowed to have Never Say Never Again, then I'll go with The World Is Not Enough for a Brosnan hat-trick.

The best James Bond.

I liked Roger Moore`s Bond films too and as mentioned, Daniel Craig is a fine Bond and Casino Royale is a fine film but i just can`t see past the films done by Connery.

Aye, Die Another Day verged on horrific and almost put me off James Bond films! The Bourne Series grabbed me and made me forget about those poor, latter Bond efforts but Casino Royale reignited my faith that Bond is best!

Tough tough tough but I just couldn't get into Quantum of Solace so for me that's the turkey. As someone said maybe it was an expectation thing after Casino Royale.

Moonraker was the first one I saw at the flicks.

Casino Royale was just class.

And I always liked OHMSS.

Harry Palmer

I'll choose from 3 different Bonds...

1. Goldfinger..... I woould have gone for From Russia With Love as both had great songs, Robert aka Quint Shaw was in Russia but I suppose it was the often quoted line that won it.....

2. The one with Jaws wearing a massive clown outfit? Probably already mentioned and most likely declared shite.....Kiel was synonymous with the role..then he turned up in Pale Rider and looked much the same...

3. Casino Royale. Really enjoyed it.

Worst: Brosnan abominations.

Still, might have a look at the new Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks....haven't read any so I really should start.. Ian Fleming first I think.

You could try the newest effort, Carte Blanche by some American novelist. Read it in about three days, and all the time you just get the feeling he's trying to hard to establish British credentials. And the ending is, er, rubbish.

Sebastian Faulks....you've just ruined it.

Was that not Moonraker? Thunderball had the machine to 'massage' his back or something along those lines.

2 - Live and Let Die

Roger plays a card trick to bed Solitaire. Lots of Voodoo Hoodoo, Jaws, 70s jazz, speed boats and JW Peppa turns up for the first time.

Jaws was in The Spy who loved me and Moonraker. Although I agree thats it's one of the best

Guess mine would be

3. Goldeneye

2. Goldfinger

1. The man with the golden gun. (I actually went to the island where Scaramanga's 'lair' was when I was in Thailand a couple of years ago.)

Worst

Die another day by a mile. Just awful.

Best:

1. From Russia with Love - the quintessential Cold War spy film.

2. Goldfinger - "No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!", oh and the golf game. Class.

3. The Man with Golden Gun - One of Moore's better outings.

Honourable mention for OHMSS...it's a pity Connery had walked by then.

Worst:

1. Octopussy - simply rank rotten.

2. Tomorrow Never Dies - Brosnan (who was an ok Bond) must've needed the cash or been contractually obliged. Awful, and a cameo for Madonna wakes it all the more laughable.

3. View to a Kill - Roger, mate, you're too old!!!

Thanks for the straightener!

The latter Brosnan films are very poor imo that they blur into one big celluloid turd.

You are right enough about the one with Jaws. I was getting muddled up because of the train (He fights Jaws on the train in the Spy who Loved Me) and Bond is on a train at the the end of Live and Let Die (with the Witch Doctor on the Guard's Carriage).

Any film with Timothy Dalton in it is better than any film without Timothy Dalton and therefore Living Daylights and Lisense to Kill are joint first with the rest in joint last! :)
