SERVICE INTERRUPTION

The board should have been shut out to those that hadn't paid. If that wasn't enough then it should have been organised to prioritise those that paid the most.

I think more folk would pay if the forum was better and more reliable in times of need.

I agree, just think those that have contributed already should be given priority, otherwise what's the point.

Do Hibs.net have more paid members than jkb?

Dont think so!!

Did Hibs.net crash?

Think about it :geek:

I can't speak for Hibs.net but this forum always seems to be a lot busier. I think you have a cheek complaining about a service that you don't contribute to the running of :whistling:

Same old same old

Any big news and JKB is down the toilet.

Had to go over to Hibs.net to find out any transfer activity on Hearts.

Wouldnt want to see a 'Hearts class' 'Hibs class' thread when it comes to our respective fans forums. :ninja:

Wouldn't be like you to raise your head over the parapet during a Negative Period , would it.

Wait? You're not even a paid member?

So you stopped contributing money to the upkeep of the service and your surprised when the service suffers?

You're like a scrounging benefit thief.

I stopped paying because the service isnt good enough in times of demand yet other club forums with less members and just as much traffic volume seem to cope no problem.

Seems a bit iffy to me.

Whats the point in paying for a poor service?

Do you do that when shopping etc?

Is there a problem with kb just now usually when you hover over a thread you get info about it, now it just states view topic, have tried signing out and back in but it makes no differnce.

I have to admit that when you compare the ?5 a year that I spend on KB, to the amount of time I waste spend on here, losing service once in a while is a small price to pay.

Some of the comments on this thread defy belief. This is a magnificent forum, very well run almost all of the time. Many people access it for free; some pay a measly ?5 each year. FIVE POUNDS for heavens sake. Yet to judge by many folks' attitudes, you'd think they were about to lose their homes or something.

If you do pay a fiver, it's fantastic value for money - and the server almost never goes down. That it does very occasionally is in keeping with almost every website on the entire world wide web. The owners, admins and mods don't get paid, do this out of their own spare time - yet look at the grief they get.

Is this why Scotland is known throughout the world as a nation of whining curmudegons? I can't believe I'm about to write this with my 25,475 posts - but so the server crashed last night. So ******* what? Seriously people: get a life.

Well yes it would. More subscriptions = more money = higher quality server and / or multiple servers set up in a cluster each load sharing the forum and the connections to the forum.

Less free loading registered members = less connections = better service for those who are subscribed and accessing the forum.

To be fair im pulling a few folks chain on this thread.

Do think though that on days like yesterday that other club forums ie Hibs.net hold up better than ours and this has went on for years.

Never paid my fiver for the past while because ive not really been on jkb that much but if it helps improve things then i would be willing to pay no probs.

But Im interested to know what could be done to eradicate nights like last night.

Rant over.

Im not so sure.

How do Hibs.net manage on a night like last night with less subscribed members than JKB?

Also how did their server cope with all the Hearts fans like me who had to look on their forum to see if there was any news about Hearts?

Dont think your argument holds up to be honest because in reality thats what should happen but doesn't!

There was a period of time some time ago when last nights glitch happened every time there was a major announcement. I have paid my five since payments were instituted and I can honestly not remember losing service such as last night, until last night. As it was on checking in when normal service was resumed, watching Hot in Cleveland and One and a Half Men also starring Charlie Sheen playing himself was more informative and had more new content.

For the record, the difference between us getting more oomph on the server thus stopping the downtime, and, remaining as is, was, ?4.99.

I therefore have no qualms in blaming you.

My argument holds up as I'm right and if you disagree I will just have to destroy your computer remotely. It's unfortunate but this is just cyberlife :(

I would have to think the JKB server(s) is brimming full of memory, processing power and a phat array of the latest SSD, multiple NICs with 10G throughput and directly connected to the UK internet backbone, with enough redundancy in place that only a small nuclear holocaust would knock it briefly off it's stride. That's what my ?5 buys, nothing less B)

It's a common mistake. I take it you went with the upgrade and have a small Krankiesque woman shooting the 50ps out her lady widget at the meter? Meant to be more efficient but the back of our server room looks like a war zone from all the missed credit.

She was pretty accurate up until last night.

I blame the loosening of the walls and the fact they installed new earthing floor tiles.

As disappointing as last night was, I am grateful to the Admin and Mods that keep this site running for a fiver a year. I mind the days when crashes were the norm on what was a fairly basic site.

Look at all the add ons and sub forums and we really have a cracking site. I regularly check out other teams forums and can say hand on heart with no JKB tinted glasses on, that this is the best I have viewed.

So what if a couple of times a year it crashes for a couple of hours? Unless full time staff are paid and subs are increased/compulsory, then we will have some hiccups.

Yes I would prefer it if subscribed members only could have viewed last night but I appreciate the explanation that has been provided Re the surge in users. I dont know any of the mechanics of how a site works so I trust the Admin that we have in place.

?5 A YEAR for the hours I spend on here is a bargain.

One thing I would like to ask is what is the argument against compulsory subs? Would this help reduce the number of wind up merchants posting whilst increasing revenue for possible improvements to the system?

Anyway, that is more than my tuppence worth.

We all come here because we are passionate about our club.

Without JKB and it's members, supporting Hearts would be a weird thing - one goes hand in hand with the other (IMO), so thanks to all the members who help make JKB what it is and again, apologies for the slight downtime, but be assured, it's being address as I type.

I have no issue with the downtime itself the thing that was annoying was that those members who have actually contributed weren't prioritised, if that's because you guys were caught off guard then I can understand.

Just would hope that from now on it would be guests/ subscribed / paid members getting locked out in that order.

If you read back a bit I'm pretty sure Uly explained how they did attempt to shut out different categories but the sudden influx was just too much. It seems perfectly reasonable to me. unsure.gif

More importantly, who the heck are these part timer weirdos who only spend 14 minutes here at a time? And how do they do it?

It was a case of our (or more specifically, my) being caught off guard by the speed at which 2,000 additional users decided to jump on to the forum in a very short space of time.

Ironically, the plan also failed because it relied on exactly the order of priority you've suggested. I blocked guest access, and then all the guests who had accounts logged on before I had time to block registered users. If I'd blocked registered users first the guests wouldn't have noticed any problem and then I could have blocked them, and in all probability the server wouldn't have crashed. It's a case of live and learn, I s'pose.

The other thing is that it isn't simply a question of money. The reality is that for most of the last year the server operated at way below capacity. If we over-engineered the equipment it would be a waste of resources that could be spent on other things, particularly the charitable causes we support. The sensible way to operate is to build in a reasonable amount of spare capacity, and then upgrade when we are approaching the limits of the existing configuration. That's what we did last year, and we're doing it again. However unlike last year when we moved software and server in one "big bang", this capacity upgrade will involve a couple of smaller steps, with shorter periods of downtime and less changes for members.
