Best ever Female Vocalist

No one has mentioned Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs. One of my favourites.

Alison Moyet has one solitary vote...I'm making that two.

As an aside, I had a friend from Bo'ness who got off with Liz Frazer one night when we were drinking in Linlithgow. Her partner in crime Robin Guthrie got wind of the fact and threatened to have my mate shot.

Don't know if he would have....but my mate never went near Liz again

Aretha Franklin for the voice.

Debbie Harry for the performance

From the same era;

Poly Styrene

Hazel O'Conned

Annie Lennox

Siouxsie Sioux

You may not all be keen on their music, but these ladies can sing some!

Also Patti Smith from that era.

On a more Metal style:

- Skin from Skunk Anansie, who I finally saw live at T after being into from the start.

- Tarja, former singer of Nightwish.

- Ann Wilson of Heart

On the Dance/Electronic style:

- Karin Dreijer of The Knife & Fever Ray (very original style)

- As for my favourites, I'd have to go for Beth Gibbons of Portishead or Liz Frazer of Cocteau Twins.

Karen Carpenter - such a 'clean' natural voice

Ann Wilson (Heart) - in her prime, awesome. The female Robert Plant

Alison Moyet

Annie Lennox

a lot of really good shouts on this thread, and its really cool to see that not all of them are "technically" good singers, but have that special something in their voice

i would be here all day and all night naming singers and songs i love for whatever reason though, so thats why i simply would name aretha as she just has everything

- Skin from Skunk Anansie, who I finally saw live at T after being into from the start.

holy crap batman, i almost forgot about skin. she is AMAZING

Best ever - Aretha or Dusty probably.

Not best ever candidates but right good singers none the less - Maria McKee (very under-rated but a hell of a voice), Natalie Merchant & Horse McDonald.

Just had a quick look over my cd collection. I DONT HAVE A SINGLE ALBUM FROM A FEMALE VOCALIST... not one.

Sure there is the odd good song here and there but generally speaking:

FEMALE VOCALS ARE SHIT.

Jill Scott brilliant Golden one of my fave songs .Not to sure about Diana though not a patch on Martha the best female vocalist at

Motown.Unlike Diana she wouldnt let Berry Gordy into her pants!Need to revise my earlier statement Dusty would make it into my top ten.

Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, Annie Lennox, Elizabeth Fraser, Kate Bush and Alison Moyet are just a number of Brits, just of the top of my head, that are better than Christina. That's without getting started on the Americans in the 60's.

On Christina though I would GHP.

Liz Fraser

Karen Matheson

Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins.

I've always loved Chaka Khan, she has a great voice, sweet but strong.

Sinead O'Connor is a bit of a bampot but also an amazing singer.

Alison Moyet was fantastic with Yazoo, not sure her own material showcased her voice as well.

I suppose I'd have to give a nod to Amy Wino, when she's not out her face she can sing. Also quite like Paloma Faith, a bit bonkers again but a very good singer, she has one of those voices that can do jazz, big band and blues equally well.

Manufactured pop acts don't count. She's not original, innovative, or unique in the slightest.

Joni Mitchell is magnificent.

'Circle Game' and 'Both Sides Now' are just incredible.

Best ever? Without a doubt Billie Holiday for me but I can see how according to taste Ella Fitgerald, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Joni Mitchell, even Barbra Streisand might feature. I quite like Amy Winehouse, who fits my definition of a vocalist - a singer and interpreter of songs.
