Sadly, the answer lies at the door of the Prem League and the utter ruin it has brought of English football, and more widely, football in general in the world, in tandem with the equally despicable cartel, the Champions League. If I recall correctly they were also good in Sensible World Of Soccer. Not liked them much since then tbh.
