didn't have such a smug look on his coupon when Ally Mauchlen stamped on his throat :santa1:

I take it that was attempt at a wind up

Nope. I liked him. I certainly wasn't the only one either. Darren Jackson's one of those players who you loathe when he's playing for the opposition, but many had a different view of when he played for us. And whether or not he was a Jambo as a kid, I think it's obvious he now holds us in highest regard, despite his time with Hibs and Celtic.

I will support anyone who wears the Hearts jersey with pride and commitment and wont slag of any Hearts player, but he was so hard to like and support but I managed, but in my top 10? Not even in my top 50.

Oh, I totally accept it's a very controversial point of view. I just had a lot of time for him, and a lot of empathy for the Hearts side he played in. Which often under-performed, not because it was lazy as many thought, but because its confidence was so fragile. It seemed for all the world to me that when Jackson played well, we played well; and when he didn't, we didn't. At his best for us, he was tremendous, and a hugely important influence: remarkable given his background as a hate figure among our support.

Looking at the names above Jen - Niemi, Cameron, Jacko, Juanjo, and your mention of Tomaschek, who I also had a lot of time for - you seem to have had the same fondness for the team around that time as I did. And you're one of a handful of posters on here who, when you agree with something I say, leave me feeling very confident that I'm right. :santa4:

1993 for me.

Same players as Shaun, although I'd substitute one ex-HIV for another; Jackson for Hartley.

Jackson had his place in HMFC history and, to be fair, I can see where you're coming from, Lawson. A truly inspired signing who almost single-handedly kept us up the season he signed.

EDIT: Now that I think about it again, I'd drop Flogel for Mark de Vries.

I'd understand considering Tomaschek though but surely Flogel should be in there?

Like Eckauskas he was also the first hearts player I met. Also liked Valois, was sat next to him during a scotland rugby match once.

If I got to pick 11 Tam would be there! We were quite lucky at the start of our Hearts-supporting lives that we had a lot of players who played for the jersey and we were relatively successful.

I must have a thing for keepers as well with Rousset, Niemi and Gordon in there. The shelf-life of players nowadays is so short it's a miracle kids have any favourites now. Presumably it's gonna have to be young guys like Wallace, Driver, Thomson or Eggert.

At the time, Rousset was a hero of mine. It's only retrospectively - and probably because I was spoiled by Gordon and especially Niemi - that I looked back and realised how many mistakes he made at times. Still a very good player for the club, and played a massive role on that beautiful day in May, which represented personal redemption too of course. But for me, he's probably more a cult hero than a legend.

Didn't pick them as a quasi team selection - these were only players who I reckoned were amongst the best i'd seen in over fifty years supporting the club. Yes Levein and Wardhaugh are up there as well alongside players like Davie Holt, Johnny Hamilton, Alec Young, Donald Ford and maybe even Rudi and Paul Hartley. As for the three keepers - all of them were great players for us in their particular time at the club.

That,s how I viewed it also and I accept its all a bit subjective. You could make a case for all the players mentioned. What I would say is that from our era Dave Mackay would figure in everyone,s list. He is certainly my favourite all time Hearts player.
