JamboJay
Horí, má panenko (The Firemans Ball) - Czechoslovakia- 1967 Nikita - France - 1990 Das Boot - Germany - 1981 Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai) - Japan - 1954 Belle de Jour -France - 1967 These are only my initial thoughts, it being quite late but I do thoroughly enjoy foreign language films, and have done since I was a teenager. The're not in any order, just as they came to me. 2 possibly 3 are in B & W but that does not detract from their impact. The sub-titles mean you have to concentrate on the characters and what the story is all about. It's just a shame there's no space in today's T V schedules to showcase 'proper' film making anymore

redjambo
Excluding silent films (in which case films like Metropolis, Nosferatu and Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari would be in there), my top 5 would be, in no particular order: . Il Postino (1994) . Delicatessen (1991) . La haine (1995) . Ladri di biciclette (1949) . Der blaue Engel (1930) Bloomin' difficult to choose though! bighusref
Seven Samurai by a distance IMO. Then stuff like... La Haine Oldboy The Vanishing La Femme Nikita City of God Oh, and I thought Baise Moi (as named by others above) was rubbish as was Battle Royal. Man Bites Dog was interesting but more than a little disturbing IMO.

Gershwin
I'm quite lucky as I get free tickets to the filmhouse with my work so I almost always choose to watch foreign films over the blockbusters. Can't really decide on a favourite but here's a fine list of some films that haven't been mentioned yet (I think) that one should see: Caché White Ribbon - Two Michael Haneke films. Linha de Passe - some awesome football scenes in this. The Beat that my heart skipped - looking forward to Jacques Audiard's new film 'A Prophet'. Let the right one in - there was a thread recently on this film. It's ****ing brilliant and has one of the most cinematic climaxing scenes I've seen in a while. The Three Colours trilogy - Epic films about France. Belleville Rendez-vous - a nice wee French animation. The guy who made it is based in Edinburgh now. The Baader Meinhof complex - A bit long but the cinematography is amazing.

Gerd Muller
Do FilmFour show foreign movies? I forgot that we actually get FilmFour so might start watching it. After viewing this thread yesterday, saw Motorcycle Diaries listed and knew the DVD was in the house after I bought it in Fopp a year ago. Had never watched it since I bought it so gave it a go last night. Superb film. Sunday nights might be my foreign movie night.
