What new words have come into the English language since the beginning of the century or what other linguistic changes have there been?

"Fail" as a noun has recently come into fashion.

Put what you remember in this thread.

Explain please...

:smiley2:

In 2003, the French refused to support the U.S.-led "coalition of the willing" into going into Iraq. The U.S. public reacted against France, refusing to buy French produce, branding them "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" and changing the name of French fries to Freedom fries, even in the House of Representatives. See https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Freedom_fries

Web 2.0 is the phenomenon whereby we, the public, generate the information content on the world wide web (e.g. in Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, blogs). It has led to all sorts of names with "2.0", e.g. Medicine 2.0, by those using Web 2.0 technologies. See https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Web_2.0

Pete came, he promised us a demo, he left. He "did a Pete".

An example of "shan patter".

Shan is one of those "Edinburghisms" that seems to have been about forever, along with barry and radge.

According to my kids I must not use 'new' words like

shan

pagger

square go

cool

sound

tidy

so I'm now going to use even older new words like Cosmic, Far Out, etc.

Words like shan, barry and gadgie are actually old travellers words or country words.

Shan - manure,muck

If you go to Yetholm in the borders where the ***** king always had his cottage the young man picked to lead the gala day type stuff is called the "barry gadgie"

Not new words but certainly different usages.

Inanely calling any minor event in life a "journey". Beloved word of celebrities and anyone with aspirations to fame.

"Oh my love it's always a shame to lose someone from Strictly in the first week; how do you feel?"

"It's been a journey, Bruce, it really has".

Describing something as "a big ask". I think this originates from Australian cricketers describing the run total they've been set, but it has been readily accepted into British English in the last four years.

"Wi-Fi" - Wireless internet, heard it said alot!

also i-stuff... such as ipod etc...

And referring to young people/chavs as "Hoodys" is new i believe!
