That's a really cool/interesting place to live. What are you doing that's taken you there? I was reading about Nunavut and its 29'000 population. It must be incredibly peaceful but equally lonely at times. Being surrounded by that kind of wilderness is awe inspiring; the feeling of insignificance, once you have come to terms with it, can be invigorating and actually, in a philosophical sense, very positive.

Do you get to ski much? Just that the mountains look like they have some sick lines if you wanted to take a heli or even go hiking. I looked at the pics around and there seems to be a glacier in one or two as well. The mountains don't look as dramatic as in AK, but still some amazing riding to be had, I'm sure.

I guess you could stretch the description to 'scientist' ... a wildlife technician for teh Territorial govermnent. Our mandate is terrestrial wildlife which in our particular case basically amounts to counting caribou and muskox ... been counting for nine years now ... not that exciting after a few field seasons actually.

Beats hanging out in Porty library at 11 am on a tueday morn, mind - that was many moons ago now.

My folks were teachers and we originally moved here in '72 when I was just a nipper. Always wanted to return, and got the chance in '96 ... two yrs too early !! Blast. I was smilling from afar though, that day in May.

Yup, Nunavut just turned 10 in April past. Land of contrasts ... sheer vast beauty ... the island across the sound (20 miles away but looks closer as the mts are 6500ft), Bylot is approx the same size as Scotland. Social problems are rampant in many of the communities - most have >50% unemployment, overcrowded housing, very high suicide rates. People get by, though.

The 24hr sunlight at this time of the year is great. Conversely, the winter is hard ... you never get used to the darkness. Sun disappears mid Nov and re-appears first week of Feb. Thank JC for satellite telly, though I've only ever seen one Hearts match live in all those years.

You could use snowmobiles to get you up some of these mountains, coz as you say, many aren't quite as dramatic as Alaska. Helicopters come in at about $2000 an hour without fuel. Snow tends to be rather hard-packed for the most part though. easier just to stick to the snowmobile

Don't know if any of you saw the Billy Connolly special recently - got the chance to hang out with him for a couple of days during the shoot around the Pond area(mate from Paisley who originally came over with the Hudson's Bay Company was the main Outfitter for Granada) - decent guy despite his footballing affiliations is the Big Yin.

Hoping Hearts get through the Europa qualifier so I can join all you lot on the continent in the fall. Fingers crossed.

Cheers for the interest.
