Screpis will need time to settle, warns Frail

By COLLEEN PATERSON

CARETAKER boss Stephen Frail welcomed Fernando Screpis into the fold yesterday ? but cautioned that it may take the Argentine time to adjust to the Scottish game.

Screpis made his first appearance in a maroon jersey since signing from FBK Kaunas in the January transfer window in the reserve match against Motherwell.

He was the Tynecastle side's only new face last month but showed some decent touches as he played just over an hour at Forthbank.

The 28-year-old carved out several chances for the Jambos before being replaced by Alistair Divine in 65 minutes.

And Frail saw enough of his new charge in that time to believe that he can make the grade in Gorgie, although it will take time for him to adapt to the pace of the football in this country.

Frail said: "It will take him a while to get used to the pace of Scottish football and the way that we want him to play.

"Everyone can see that he has got a good touch, good feet and good ability but we need him to be a bit more dynamic. :rolleyes:That will come with time and games though, and this is what these reserve games are all about for him right now.

"He is very aware of things around about him but he will have to realise that when you are in Scottish football you don't get the time that you maybe would in other countries and there are always people in there nipping at your feet.

"But he will adapt to that, it's all a learning curve for him as well and I'm sure it won't take him long to get used to it.

"He's certainly keen to be involved.":)

However Frail conceded that it may be another week or so before he is fit enough to come into contention for a place in the starting 11.

"We have run some tests on him and he has a wee bit to find in terms of fitness, but hopefully with hard work in training he will not be too far away," he continued.

"We're probably looking at a couple of weeks before we can say that he's fully up to speed."(what, like what Nade is eh, was he fully fit before he got games, mmmm)

If Screpis is to make a place in the first team his own this season, he will first have to dislodge Ruben Palazuelos, who has impressed since his arrival from Spanish side Gimnastic in the summer.

And Frail added: "The good thing about bringing him in is that is increases the competition for places again. We've all seen how well Ruben has done over the last few months and they are both in the same position. So Fernando knows that he will have to do even better if he wants to get a regular place in the first team."

Screpis lined up against the Steelmen in a strong Hearts side which also included Lee Wallace, Marius Zaliukas:rolleyes:, Neil McCann, Kestutis Ivaskevicius and Christian Nade.

And Frail admitted that it was one of the most experienced sides the Jambos have fielded in a reserve match as they bid to force their way back into the top six of the SPL table.

The Argentine was involved from the start, taking a heavy tackle inside the opening three minutes, but shaking it off just seconds later to fire in a brilliant first-time effort that flew just over Luke Daniels' left-hand post.:)

He then released the impressive Jason Thomson and the young right-back whipped in a cross at head height for Ricardas Beniusis, but the Lithuanian striker got under the ball and could only send his header sailing over the crossbar.

Thomson caused the Fir Park side all sorts of problems and sent in another inch-perfect ball before the break which Beniusis rose to meet, but this time the keeper was in the right place at the right time to palm it away from point-blank range. Chances were few an

d far between after the break, although Nade may have done better after being teed up by Thomson on

well another that is not fit then ,WTF was he doing in Kansus then was he not involved in lots of games for them, i feel vlad flu coming on.

The point about taking time on the ball is an important one in Scottish football.

Ruben is still learning that he does not get the time on the ball in the SPL that he did in Spain. He was caught on the ball at least 4 times on Saturday.

Exactly..........AEK managed it against us easy enough!

If Screpis is not up to speed then you really have to ask what is going on as they knew he was coming here since JULY!!

We are a shambles I'm afraid.........sort it out!

I think we have poor players particularly up front which make it difficult for the defenders and midfielders to find them.

With regard to getting time on the ball, poorish teams such as Celtic have done well in Europe by pressing right onto teams as good as Barcelona.

Foreign players often take a while to get used to the speed of the game in Britain, no matter what their ability is- fact

It amazes me how many players we have signed in the last 2 years who are 'allegedly' unfit.

We signed something like 12 in that famous Jan transfer window under Rix and nearly all of them were sent for special training. I found this suprising considering they all came from professional clubs.

However, we still seem to be signing players who have fitness issues Velikca, Nade and Scerpis all spring to mind recently.

Very suprising considering how unfit we are as a team compared to Levein team etc.

Strikes me that are scouting is poor or there is a wider issue. Such as the signing policy is completely to ****** in that we are not signing players who can contribute.

The thing is of some folk at the club were able to locate their finger then pull it out their jacksy he could have been here on the 1st of January, train with the first team, get up to pace and be able to play for us before the transfer window had 'slammed' shut.

Thats the real issue here IMO. He should have been here 6 weeks ago, it was a crazy decision to leave it until the 31st.

Too much.

Has anyone in this shambolic setup ever been considered - or deemed themselves - as actually being fit ?

For fecks sake ...

Fair point, but lets be honest, WTF was the point of the 6 month loan spell in Kaunas? He always had a contract for us. Therefore, the powers at be deemed him good enough for us, why did he go to Kaunas?

To help Kaunas out with there CL campaign. Sorry, not good enough. I know its old ground ,but I support Hearts and don't give a flying ...... about Kaunas.

Only Romanov knows. It was certainly a wierd one.

This may be a stretch but they might have found out that they were getting Ruben so decided just to let Screpis go to Kaunas. But that is just a random guess and most probably wrong.

Ever get the feeling that Hearts can't win with some of our fans? I seem to remember another Kaunas import being rushed straight into the 1st team, getting pelters from the fans and having to spend months in the reserves building his confidence up.

The point about taking time on the ball is an important one in Scottish football.

Ruben is still learning that he does not get the time on the ball in the SPL that he did in Spain. He was caught on the ball at least 4 times on Saturday.

Watching Gomis from Dundee Utd. again tonight he seems to have learned pretty quickly. Think we maybe missed a player there.

Realise we have similar just think he's got a wee bit more drive going forward.

Ruben needs to be made aware that he can't do his "drag back on to his left foot turn" too often players will see it coming as mentioned above.

It's amazing how Frail just cannot gauge what is going on during a game. His comments about Screpis relate to Screpis getting caught out a couple of times very early in the game (which I attended), otherwise Screpis was pretty good. He will not be as good as Ruben defensively, but has more to offer going forward.

Frail's inability to analyse a player's performance is best summed up with his comment on Elliot's performance in midfield during Tuesday's game "Callum Elliot put in a really good shift as well, which he always does". No Frail, that is NOT what happened! Elliot looked lost, spent most of the game wingeing and moaning and plodding around totally dis-interested. To be fair to Elliot, he had not a bad last 10 minutes!

I was thinking the same about Screpis. He took a couple of heavy ones early on but just go up and got on with it. I was impressed with his attitude and he was shouting at team mates, trying to organise the defence, from the start. He also made some good telling passes. To be fair to Elliot I thought he was better than you say but he did spend a lot of time whingeing. That just seems to be his nature. I said long ago (while he was still flavour of the month with many on here) that he has an attitude problem and this is holding back his development.
