Long lasting treats and chews for big dogs

Right, this is a bit of a daft one, but I'm looking for recommendations on treats and chews that are actually going to last my dog longer than a few seconds.

I just timed him there, and his daily Dentastick was gone in 14 seconds.  He's a big lad, and he just obliterates things faster than you could believe. He loves things like Pigs Ears, but again we have the same problem, where it's gone in less than a minute.   Treats are so expensive for what they are but it feels like a particular rip off when the "long lasting" chews are done inside 60 seconds.

Does anyone have any recommendations - ideally ones that don't involve rawhide?  I'm looking more specifically for a sort of one off treat thing, rather than something like a Yak Milk bar - he does like these, but it's not something he will get excited about being given, rather having a nibble on it when he's bored.

I'm ideally looking for a Dentastick style thing that is at least 50% concrete or at least with some sort of steel rebar in it.

Pup is 45 kilos, to give you an idea of what we're dealing with!

Hadn't realised rawhide was such a big no-no. Used to have Bernese and that was the only think that didn't get snaffled in seconds, they loved pigs ears but they were gone quicker than you could get them out the box.

Go into your local butcher and ask for a knuckle bone. Will keep them quiet for a while and good for their teeth.

Have you tried antler chews?

Antler chews are amazing, but again it's more of an evening nibble when he's bored, rather than an actual treat. He sees it as more of a toy.

We bought an absolutely massive one that was about 40 quid, and it lasted him about 6 months before he'd really wrecked it.  Money well spent!

Get him a large nylabone, no calories and safe. Under no circumstances feed him any rawhide. Rawhide free chews are available in all supermarkets, large ones. Avoid anything by purina. No cooked bones either. If he is a big, a raw knuckle from the butchers will see him. Fine. For toys. Get him a scooby doo ball. Only toy my staffy can't destroy.

I don't really have anything against rawhide in theory, it does what it is designed to do and is a good solution to the problem of things not lasting very long, but unfortunately he has a tenancy to eat things in big chunks, and rawhide can cause intestinal blockages. It's better for us not to bother!

We've already had one emergency vet stomach pump (£350!!!) when he stole and ate a whole corn on the cob - which they can't digest and would have caused a blockage.

Wee bugger.

Good shout on the bones, he loves them. You can actually get them pre-packaged in Tesco and other supermarkets now in the treat section.  From the butcher is probably a better shout, sure they'll have better ones than the packed ones!

That would last about 30 seconds. He sniffs out the squeaker in them, and then methodically nibbles a way into them. Little tiny front-teeth-only chewing through the stitching

He's such an arsehole and I love him to bits.

Good bone from butcher.

Just don't go near him.

Although it's fun teasing.

Especially in. German.

My wife gets the Yak chews and Raspberry flavour ones for our two, think you get them at Pets at Home and they will probably help you get the different ones. She also gets buffalo horns that stink but last ages.

They're cracking things, and he does like them, but he doesn't engage with them on the same level as a treat like a Dentastick.  He gets things like the yak chews and they'll last him a while, but it's more of a toy to him. He'll leave it alone, and not really be excited by my offering it to him - same as the antlers.

I was really just hoping for an out of the packet treat that would last him 10 minutes rather than 10 seconds.  It's probably not possible

My lab is the same and wolfs down everything including Dentalstix.

The only thing really that keeps him engaged for a good while is meat Paste in a Kong.

We did have antler chews and bones but wasn't great for his teeth and gums, similarly pigs ears as he got older so more softer treats these days.

Your dug weighs the same as a girl that works for me occasionally! I’ll concede she’s quite wee but that’s a lot of hound.

He is some boy.

I'm 6ft 4, and he is the same size as me when he stands up on his back legs.  He'll put his front paws on my shoulders and lick my ears without any effort at all

At full stretch, he makes me look small!

Big friendly lump, he loves everyone.  If you're not a fan of dogs, he would be one hell of an intimidating beast!

Feeding him, however.....

Paste in a Kong is a great one, he loves cream cheese or peanut butter, especially if it's been chucked in the freezer in the morning.

This would actually be the best solution if I remembered to do it every day!!

Our dog chewed on an old work boot for a week. Those boots were supposed to be indestructible, clearly not dog proof though. Complete destruction.

That's what we do with our dog, it's now a daily chore of filling a Kong with peanut butter and banana mashed together, then stuffed in a Kong and frozen for later in the day. She loves it, and it lasts her at least 10 minutes. She's "only" 20kg at the moment though, so might not last your dog as long!

My Labrador is the exact same, she eats those dentastix whole, not even joking, one swallow. We had to stop as she would continually choke on them.

Another +1 for a Kong. Fill it with peanut butter, carrot, some dry dog food etc and freeze it. Will keep your dog amused for some time.

That may have been the reason that they took so long to chew.

There's something a bit Malky Mackay about that advert, though! "Of its time" is probably the kindest way to describe it!

Dogs love peanut butter but check the ingredients first, though. Dont use peanut butter with xylitol in.

it's a sugar substitute and not good for dogs

I get "Peamutt Butter" from Amazon or Pets at Home, no added sugar or salt, and no sugar substitute. At £2.50 a jar though, it costs more than most human peanut butters....probably because it has less added shite in it

Go have a look at an independent pet shop.  They may have a really good selection of natural chews.   I know Dofo's in Edinburgh does.

The other place to look - Dog shows.

I'd never thought of cream cheese or banana as a treat and freezing is a good idea as well, so will give that a go, particularly as the banana we pack in my daughters lunch box remains resolutely uneaten most days.

The suggestion of filling a kong and freezing it is genius.

Thanks to those who have suggested it will save us a few bob currently spent chews...

Cream cheese Kong went down an absolute treat today with the warm weather!

Keeps him busy for about 10 minutes, which is far better than anything else!

Got a ham knuckle bone from the butchers the other day.  Gave it to him this afternoon.  It was about the size of my forearm!

It lasted 5 minutes
