JamboGraham
We often debate on here if our lack of goals is simply due to poor strikers or is it as much the lack of chances we make... SPL Shots (all) Rangers (483) Celtic (453) Hibs (355) Hearts (334) United (324) Aberdeen (317) SPL Shots (on) Rangers (257) Celtic (256) Hearts (168) Hibs (163) United (159) Aberdeen (147) So far so good...so we are creating just about as many chances as anyone else, and getting a few more on target than most... Now for the big one... 22% of Hearts shots on target are goals (This is the 2nd worst ratio in the SPL, only St Mirren are worse (20.9%) To compare, top are Celtic @ 30.5% and Dundee Utd @ 28.9% followed by Hamilton on 28.6% In short then...our team creates a much better than average number of chances and shots on target. However, our ratio of converting these is the second worst in the SPL. So...the problem lies, in the main, with our strikers. JamboGraham - winner of "stating the obvious post" for May! Rudi Skacel
It doesnt tell us who has shot though. A Robbie neilson volley v Falkirk is one of our shots. That doesnt show in our stats. Sometimes the whole frontline (midfielders and attackers) are to blame. Example. Last night we didnt create 1 clear cut chance. is that the fault of the strikers due to bad positioning or the midfielders for not creating alot? Its impossible to say. Everything counts aswell. For example, had Drivers volley went in instead of palmed round the post, and we had won 1-0 then there would have been no threads on here lambasting him. What we need is a combination between midfield when attacking and striker. Not saying we dont have a striker problem, just we have a problem both areas. No point getting a 20 goal a season striker when we cant give him service.
Charlie-Brown
The logic of that then is that we must have one of the highest points won per goal scored ratio's in the league ie we make our goals count towards gaining points ... which also suggests our defensive record must be reasonably high in comparison to others. Scoring more goals would make things much simpler though and perhaps make games more enjoyable or easier on the eye?

Correct Charlie, It's an entertainment industry, we go to matches for the adrenalin rush of scoring goals and winning games.

However, I would think that our ratio of Defender/Midfield/Striker shots isn't too far away from other clubs so the stats are probably pretty valid. The debate over striker positions v midfield creation is near impossible to resolve...I think these stats are about as close as we might get. We have needed quality up front for longer than that to be honest... There are just so many threads that fall apart and split as soon as the name Vlad comes in... There are just so many threads that fall apart and split as soon as the name Vlad comes in... Apart from 2005-06 which was a one off season we haven't had a decent attacking line up since Neil McCann left for Rangers a decade ago. since 1997-98 when we scored 70 SPL goals we've scored 1999 - 44 2000 - 47 2001 - 56 2002 - 52 2003 - 57 2004 - 56 2005 - 43 2006 - 71 (finished 2nd) 2007 - 47 2008 - 47 2009 - 37 (so far)

What was interesting about 2006 was the huge number of goals that came from midfield that season. Still relatively low numbers for each of the strikers even in that season. Jamboscanbevicius
You're right. Even an average stirker would be a BIG imprvement on what we have... Nish, Lovell, and Sutton all have 8 goals!!! Our top scorer is Bruno with 6. We need at least 2 strikers in the summer. Personally I hope we try and get young Leigh Griffiths from Livi and a Bosman of Sandaza quality would do too
WeeToonJambo
Seriously Graham, you are a clever guy,can you really say we have not needed decent goalscorers since Velicka was sold? You don't know him, do you?? Seriously though, I think it's obvious to everyone that we need someone who can score goals regularly. We often talk about needing a 20 goal a season striker but even one who got into double figures would have seen us qualify in third already. Csaba knows this, I'm sure even Vlad must know this, so a striker will be brought in during the summer, unless they decide to go with the youngsters who have proved that they can score goals at reserve and under 19 level. He's a chip off the old block:10600: Even a very average striker like Lovell or Mehmet would have put away some of the chances Nade has missed, we'd have at least another 6 points IMO
