Thought some of K'Bers might find this interesting.

Sergey Palkin, CEO of FC Shakhtar, has described recently the exceptional IT systems to be applied at Donbass Arena. Today we will go into details.

A very strong, reliable and efficient computer network will be installed at Elite-class stadium in Donetsk. The latest IT services will be integrated into this backbone later.

“The network includes a variety of systems: structured cabling, telephone, network security, unified communications, servers and data warehouses, WiFi and others”, says Oleksandr Atamanemko, Operations Director of Donbass Arena. “The network was designed together with Cisco, a global IT and telecom leader. We’ve researched IT services installed at the best international arenas, as well as the technologies emerging or expected to appear in the market in future”.

By the time of opening of Donbass Arena, the stadium’s backbone will contain the main IT services, first and foremost, the access control including cutting-edge entry turnstiles. The modern bar code system and RFID cards attached to season tickets will rule out the possibility of forging them. By the way, the locks of all internal rooms at Donbass Arena will be controlled automatically as well. Access cards used as keys will ensure that employees, outsourcers and guests will enter only authorized rooms and zones.

Ticketing system will be equally reliable. It will allow for the fans to book regular and season tickets online and buy them in Donbass Arena cashiers and remote sale outlets. Big shopping malls in Donetsk and other cities will have automated kiosks selling tickets 24h/day.

Video control cameras will help monitor every single area at the stadium. Donbass Arena security system will fully match UEFA 5-star standards; but you will hardly see security guards in uniforms. The order at the site and in the surrounding park will be ensured by a coordination center run by representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Emergencies and the Regional Healthcare Department. A so-called video-surveillance room will be built in Donbass Arena to process the information provided by trained stewards and supervisors. In addition, sensors, alarm-systems and over 300 CCTV cameras will be installed all around the stadium.

Parking management system has been developed for Donbass Arena. All parkings near the stadium will be automated. Only holders of season ticket of a certain category (RFID card) will have the access on match days. The parking will be open for everybody on non-match days. It is interesting that people will enter the parking, pay and leave without assistance of personnel.

“Payment in all catering outlets of Donbass Arena will be only cashless. A card with the required amount on the account will suffice to pay in restaurant, lounge-bar, fan-cafe or fast food. You can buy and top up it online or in automated kiosks”, says Oleksandr Atamanemko. “Once you have the card, you can use it to pay for different goods and services everywhere in the stadium. This will help avoid queues in catering and trade outlets”.

The card will have many functions: a season ticket, a parking “key", a payment product, a loyalty card, etc.

Donbass Arena will take pride in the customer-relations management system. Every fan using the regular card will be updated about events and loyalty programs at the stadium. Football supporters will learn latest news from electronic and post mail-outs. E-access and e-payment system will collect and analyze information about actions of arena visitors. This will help identify likes of fans and guests, popularity of services and reaction to new services.

An unrivalled digital signage management system will be created at the Elite-class arena in Donetsk. It will broadcast different information on each of 500 monitors depending on their location. For example, the monitors in fast foods and restaurants will display menus and information clips. The stadium bowl will repeat interesting episodes of matches, game statistics, etc.

Besides, additional information will be displayed over the video image. For instance, during an online TV transmission of a game, operators can inform about results of other matches in a running ad. They can also show the table, game statistics and other information next to the video image. Finally, all monitors will be used as information boards showing escape routes in emergencies.

To crown the story we’ll say that the network at Donbass Arena was designed with a big reserve of power and other properties. When new services emerge in the market, they can be integrated into the network without the need to expand it. It means that as the stadium’s infrastructure develops and global technologies appear, the new ITs will be adopted at the stadium.

Comes with heated seats too :)

Donbass Arena: More than "Elite"

06-01-09 13:03:30

Mr David Tailor, UEFA Secretary General, said during his recent visit to Donbass Arena: “The infrastructure of the Stadium fully meets all the requirements to host the Champions League and UEFA Cup finals. That means that Donetsk pitch exceeds the standards of Elite class stadiums.” Today, we will talk more about these regulations.

First is the capacity. A stadium must have 30,000 seats to match the Elite standard. Donetsk arena will seat 50,000 spectators. The roof of Donbass Arena covers almost 93% of seats; 3,800 seats remain uncovered. UEFA admits coverage of 75% of the stands to qualify for Elite. In addition, the bowl infrared-heating project is being developed. If implemented successfully, the seats in Donetsk will be heated during the cold seasons: the difference with external temperature will vary between 12-14? C. The decision to heat the stadium was exclusively made by investors; it is not required for Elite standard!

The Donbass Arena parking lots also exceed the UEFA standards. The international classification requires parking space for a minimum of two buses and ten cars for teams and officials; plus 150 parking spaces for VIPs and a parking space for 400 buses in the vicinity of the stadium. Our stadium will offer 1,000 parking lots and many parking areas near the stadium.

The pitch illumination at Donetsk arena also exceeds the requirements. According to the UEFA regulations, 1,400 lux are enough for the Elite class. Donbass Arena lighting initially contains 2,000 lux - to meet HDTV requirements in the future.

The press box is another point for discussion. UEFA strongly recommends the Elite stadium to offer: minimum 200 seats for writing journalists, 100 – for non-writing journalists and 150 for reporters. Donbass Arena will offer 424 seats for writing journalists, 432 – for non-writing reporters and 168 – for analysts. To compare, the stadiums hosting the Champions League and UEFA Cup finals must provide 150 seats for reporters and 400 seats for writing and non-writing press.

Donbass Arena is also well-equipped with commentator booths. An Elite stadium must have at least 40 positions (each booth must have at least three seats); Donetsk stadium will offer 45. Moreover, partial transformation of the western seats is possible if required: the seats can be easily re-equipped into another 76 (!) commentator seats. That will be enough to host the Champions League final, which requires 100 commentator booths.

Donbass Arena easily meets the regulations to host the Champions League final by the number of seats for spectators with disabilities. To host games of such a high level, the current regulations demand at least 2 sectors to be equipped with the dedicated seats (at least 50 seats each) and the same number of seats for companions. Donbass Arena will offer 104 seats in 8 sectors for spectators with disabilities, and 92 – for their companions.

The last but certainly not the least, the UEFA standards require toilets for all spectators to be available in each sector of the stadium, with a ratio of one toilet per 200 spectators and one urinal per 125 fans. Totally, a stadium in the elite category must be equipped with at least 411 urinals and 257 seated toilets. Donbass Arena will provide more than that: 619 seated toilets and 487 urinals.

That's like Motherwell's pitch.

Did you see the state of Shakhtar's pitch last night??

It was if a game of American Football had been played on it and they'd got Mr Magoo to put the lines down.
